The Government of Ogun State mourns the passing of His Royal Majesty, Oba Sikiru Kayode Adetona, the Awujale and Paramount Ruler of Ijebuland, who departed this life on July 13, 2025, at the age of 91. His transition, which comes at a time of national reflection following the recent passing of former President Muhammadu Buhari, is an immense loss for Ogun State and Nigeria as a whole.
Oba Adetona ascended the throne in 1960, becoming one of Nigeria’s longest-reigning traditional rulers. Throughout his remarkable 65-year reign, he was widely celebrated as a beacon of unity, wisdom, and visionary leadership. His tenure saw Ijebuland undergo a profound transformation, marked by:

- A vibrant cultural renaissance and the global elevation of the Ojude Oba festival, which became a symbol of Ijebu pride and Nigerian heritage.
- Significant infrastructural development and economic progress across Ijebuland.
- Tireless advocacy for education and healthcare, with initiatives that improved the lives of countless citizens.
- Dedication to preserving tradition while embracing modernity, earning him respect across generations.
Oba Sikiru Adetona’s legacy is indelible—his contributions to the socio-economic and cultural advancement of Ijebuland and Ogun State will be remembered for generations. The government and people of Ogun State extend heartfelt condolences to the royal family, the Ijebu people, and all Nigerians mourning this great loss.
May his soul rest in eternal peace.
