Gunmen suspected to be bandits have tragically taken the life of Mike Ode, a commander of the agro-ranger unit of the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC).
The incident occurred in Shaapera community, located in Gwer West Local Government Area of Benue State on Wednesday.
Nicholas Ode, the deceased’s uncle, recounted that his brother was brutally killed during a confrontation with herdsmen while on a special assignment in Shaapera village.
Despite the NSCDC successfully neutralizing up to 10 of the assailants during the gun battle, Mike Ode was tragically gunned down, with others managing to escape.
His body has been deposited at the morgue of the Benue State University Teaching Hospital in Makurdi.

The NSCDC Command Public Relations Officer, Superintendent of Corps Mike Ejelikwu, confirmed the incident.
He expressed condolences to the family of the deceased and assured that the NSCDC would not be deterred from fulfilling its constitutional duty of providing security for law-abiding citizens in the state.
Ejelikwu highlighted the heavy casualty suffered by the bandits during the encounter, emphasizing the bravery and sacrifice of the fallen agro-ranger commander.
The loss of Mike Ode underscores the risks faced by security personnel in the line of duty, particularly in areas plagued by insecurity. The NSCDC remains committed to its mission of safeguarding lives and property, even in the face of such tragic losses.
