NSCDC Boosts Food Security with Newly Trained Agro-Rangers in Plateau

Jos, Plateau State – The Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) is reinforcing its commitment to national food security with the recent passing out parade of 150 specially trained Agro-Rangers Squad personnel at the NSCDC Command and Staff College in Jos. The Commandant General of the NSCDC, Prof. Ahmed Abubakar Audi, emphasized that the Agro-Rangers unit is a specialized force dedicated to ensuring the safety and security of farmlands, crops, herds, farmers, and herders across the nation.

Speaking at the event, Commandant General Audi charged the newly trained officers and men to uphold professionalism in their crucial roles. He reiterated the imperative for synergy among all security agencies to effectively counter threats to national security and development, stressing that no single agency can holistically tackle the multifaceted security challenges facing the country.

This latest batch of graduates will join the over 10,000 Agro-Rangers already deployed across 19 states and the Federal Capital Territory. The unit’s mandate extends beyond protection, encompassing conflict mediation between farmers and herders and preventing the malicious destruction of agricultural assets. NSCDC sources indicate that each state in the federation now boasts over 30 trained Agro-Rangers Special Forces, with ongoing training initiatives aimed at increasing their numbers to meet evolving security demands.

The Agro-Rangers undergo rigorous training, often conducted by the Nigerian Army, in critical areas such as weapon handling, intelligence gathering, combat craft, and conflict resolution. This comprehensive preparation equips them to address various challenges, including crop damage, night grazing, and direct attacks on agricultural communities.

Plateau State Governor, Caleb Mutfwang, lauded the Commandant General for his proactive measures in tackling insecurity, particularly within the agricultural sector. Governor Mutfwang highlighted the NSCDC’s dedication, professionalism, and commitment, describing them as a “most reliable organization” in the fight against insecurity. He affirmed the state’s support for increasing the number of trained Agro-Rangers, acknowledging their vital role in protecting agricultural assets, which are critical for achieving food security.

Major General E.F. Ayinlola, General Officer Commanding 3 Division, Nigerian Army, and Commander Operations Safe Haven, alongside Plateau State Commissioner of Police, CP Emmanuel, also commended the NSCDC’s efforts, pledging continued collaboration and support to enable the Corps to fulfill its core mandate.

The establishment and continuous training of the Agro-Rangers unit represent a significant component of the federal government’s broader strategy to enhance food production and ensure a safer environment for agricultural activities nationwide. While challenges persist, as evidenced by ongoing attacks in some farming communities, the NSCDC maintains its commitment to improving operational effectiveness through strategic innovations, specialized training, and strengthened collaborations with other security agencies and local communities.

The unit has, in previous instances, been credited with helping farmers return to their fields, notably in Borno State, contributing to a resurgence in farming activities and a reduction in farmer-herder conflicts in many areas. The Federal Government has also indicated plans for further recruitment to bolster the unit’s capacity, underscoring its pivotal role in safeguarding Nigeria’s agricultural future.
