ABUJA — The race for the 2027 presidential election took an unconventional turn today as the National Rescue Movement (NRM) officially elected Nollywood actress Esther Okereke as its standard-bearer.
Okereke clinched the ticket after defeating two other aspirants in a keenly contested primary election, positioning herself to challenge established political titans in the upcoming general elections. With her victory, the screen star enters a high-stakes arena, setting up a direct confrontation with the incumbent President, Asiwaju Bola Ahmed Tinubu of the All Progressives Congress (APC), former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of the African Democratic Congress (ADC), and Peter Obi of the Nigeria Democratic Congress (NDC), among other contenders.
The emergence of a prominent creative industry figure on a major party ticket signals a potential shift in the country’s political dynamics, as third-party coalitions continue to realign ahead of the 2027 polls.
’A Sacred Assignment’
Delivering her acceptance speech shortly after the declaration of the primary results, an emotional but resolute Okereke stated that her entry into the presidential race was driven by a sense of national duty rather than personal ambition.
”I accept this nomination not for personal glory but as a sacred assignment,” Okereke declared. “I accept it as a call to service because of my unwavering belief that Nigeria shall rise and work again.”
The newly minted candidate did not mince words regarding the current state of the nation, painting a grim picture of the socio-economic challenges confronting regular citizens.
”Our nation is bleeding,” she lamented. “Millions of our people are trapped in pain, poverty, fear, and uncertainties. Families sleep in darkness in a nation overflowing with energy resources. Graduates roam the streets without jobs, and businesses collapse under the weight of economic hardship.”
The Road to 2027
Despite the somber assessment, Okereke closed her address with a message of optimism, urging Nigerians not to lose faith in the possibility of structural renewal.
”Beyond the suffering, there is restoration, hope, and a greater Nigerian future waiting to emerge,” she said.
Political analysts note that the 2027 campaign is shaping up to be one of the most volatile in recent history, characterized by major party realignments—notably Atiku’s and Obi’s shifts to alternative political platforms. While skeptics question the capacity of a political outsider to dismantle entrenched party machineries, supporters argue that Okereke’s mass appeal and clean slate could resonate deeply with an electorate weary of conventional politicians.
With the primaries concluding, the NRM is expected to announce its vice-presidential candidate and unveil its comprehensive national campaign manifesto in the coming weeks.
