Notorious Bandit Ally Dies Mysteriously in Benue Custody Amid Intensified Security Crackdown

Makurdi, Benue State – A suspected notorious bandit, Abu Alhaji, arrested in connection with the feared crime lord “Konyo,” has died under mysterious circumstances while in police custody, sparking questions and deepening the ongoing security concerns in Benue State.

This incident comes as security forces intensify operations across the troubled region, prompting even the Chief of Army Staff to temporarily relocate to the state to oversee efforts.

Alhaji was apprehended on June 1st during a fierce gun battle in Nagu community, Katsina-Ala Local Government Area. Joint security forces had stormed a hideout believed to be frequented by armed operatives linked to the infamous “Konyo” network.

During the raid, a heavy exchange of gunfire ensued, leading to Alhaji’s capture with an AK-47 rifle and 16 live rounds. Ten other suspects, identified as “Konyo’s” foot soldiers, were also detained.

However, less than 48 hours after his arrest, the narrative took a chilling turn. On June 3rd, at approximately 3:05 am, Alhaji reportedly developed sudden health complications at the Operation Zenda detention facility in Makurdi. He was immediately rushed to the Benue State Teaching Hospital, where he tragically died during treatment. Authorities have deposited his body at the hospital morgue, awaiting an autopsy to determine the exact cause of death.

Who is “Konyo”?

Amakaa Akwaza, popularly known as “Konyo,” is widely regarded as one of Benue’s most dreaded crime lords. His name evokes fear across the Sankera axis, a region ravaged by rampant kidnappings, armed robbery, and brutal killings. Security forces have been relentlessly working to dismantle his extensive network of fighters and informants, with “Overall Konyo” being a name frequently associated with banditry in the area.

The remaining ten suspects are currently undergoing interrogation as investigations into their involvement in the “Konyo” criminal empire continue.
