“Not an Education Graduate? Read This”: FG Opens Six-Month Teacher Certification

The Federal Government has opened applications for Cohort 1 of the Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway, a six-month programme designed to certify non-education graduates currently teaching in Nigerian schools.

Holders of BSc, HND, ND and OND qualifications with at least 24 months of classroom experience can now apply through the National Teachers Institute and TRCN.

A Pathway to Professionalism

The Federal Government has opened a window of opportunity for thousands of non-education graduates who are currently teaching in Nigerian schools without professional qualifications.

The Accelerated Teacher Professionalisation Pathway (ATPP) , a six-month programme designed to certify non-professional teachers, has begun accepting applications for its first cohort.

The programme, a collaboration between the Federal Ministry of Education, the National Teachers’ Institute (NTI) and the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) , is aimed at non-professional teachers who already have academic qualifications but lack formal pedagogical training and professional certification.

Applications for Cohort 1 opened on Monday and will close on September 18, 2026.

Two Qualification Pathways

The ATPP offers two distinct pathways depending on the applicant’s existing qualifications:

— Postgraduate Diploma in Education (PGDE) Pathway: Open to holders of non-education bachelor’s degrees or Higher National Diplomas (HND).

The programme lasts six months, comprising four months of hybrid coursework and two months of supervised teaching practice, carrying 40 credit units.

— Professional Diploma in Education (PDE) Pathway: Open to holders of Ordinary National Diploma (OND) or National Diploma (ND) in non-education fields.

The programme also runs for six months, with four months of coursework and two months of supervised practice, carrying 37 credit units.

Who Can Apply?

The ATPP is open to non-professional teachers currently teaching in public and non-state schools, as well as those working in early childhood care, primary, secondary, technical and vocational education, non-formal and alternative settings.

Community instructors and volunteer educators are also eligible.

However, applicants must have at least 24 months of classroom teaching experience to qualify for either pathway.

The Curriculum

The programmes are aligned with the TRCN Professional Standards for Teachers and cover professional knowledge, professional practice, professional values, ethics and conduct, professional engagement and continuing development.

Other areas include foundations of education, educational psychology, curriculum and pedagogy, inclusive education and safeguarding, assessment and quality assurance, digital and blended learning, and subject methodology and specialisation.

A Lesson for Nigeria

The ATPP is a recognition that Nigeria’s classrooms are filled with capable individuals who lack formal teaching qualifications.

By offering a fast-track pathway to certification, the government is acknowledging that the country cannot afford to lose the expertise of non-education graduates who have chosen to teach.

It is also a recognition that the quality of education depends on the quality of teachers, and that quality cannot be achieved without professional standards.

The same leaders who celebrate this initiative must ensure that it is not merely a paper exercise.

The programme must not just be rigorous, the certification must be meaningful, and the teachers who complete it must be equipped to transform Nigeria’s classrooms.

For the millions of children in Nigeria’s schools, the quality of their education depends on the quality of their teachers. This programme is a step in the right direction, but it is only a step.
