Nollywood’s Black Market Sets World Record With 51,000 at TBS

Lagos made cinema history on Saturday night as more than 51,000 people sat through the open-air premiere of the Nollywood crime thriller Black Market at Tafawa Balewa Square, breaking the Guinness World Record for the largest attendance at a film screening in a single location.

Guinness World Records recognised 51,000 qualifying viewers — those who remained from the start of the film to the end — after the screening on 26 September. The figure beats the previous mark of 43,624, set in 2015 when the Filipino film Felix Manalo was shown at the Philippine Arena. Lagos State Deputy Governor Obafemi Hamzat put overall turnout at about 64,000, but only those who completed the screening counted toward the official record.

Organisers had aimed for at least 50,000 simultaneous viewers. Gates opened at 2pm, a red carpet followed around 3pm, and the main screening began about 7pm. Music, food, games and other entertainment filled the grounds before the film rolled. When a Guinness official confirmed the feat — by video conference, according to some reports — the crowd erupted in cheers and fireworks.

Black Market, directed by Fatimah Binta Gimsay in her feature debut and co-written with Abdul Tijani-Ahmed, follows five market women running a cross-border fuel-smuggling operation amid scarcity and economic pressure. The tightly run crew is thrown into crisis when a rival kidnaps the daughter of one of them. The story was shot in Abeokuta, Ogun State.

The ensemble includes Linda Ejiofor-Suleiman as Zimuzo, the leader; Omowunmi Dada as Adesua, the mother; Scarlet Gomez as Aramide; Teniola Aladese; Susan Pwajok; Lateef Adedimeji; Uzor Arukwe; and Ibrahim Yekini (Itele D Icon), among others. Dada also served as executive co-producer. The film is a Rixel Studios production from Nora Awolowo, working with Nicole Ofoegbu, FilmOne Studios, Signet Ring Studios and Switch Visuals Production. FilmOne is the distributor. Cinema release is slated for 2 October.

Hamzat and Lagos Commissioner for Tourism, Arts and Culture Toke Benson attended, as did several Nollywood figures. The deputy governor praised the young creatives and said the industry’s reach would keep growing. FilmOne called it “one screen, one moment that just made history,” adding that Nigeria had not merely watched a movie but made history.

The event, sometimes framed as “Eko for Show,” turned a historic Lagos square into a temporary cinema and put a homegrown crime thriller at the centre of a global attendance record. For Nollywood, it is both a logistical feat and a public statement: a Nigerian story, told at scale, in one place, on one night.
