Nollywood Mourns as Veteran Actress Nkechi Nweje Laid to Rest in Anambra

ONITSHA, ANAMBRA STATE – The Nigerian film industry, Nollywood, and the entire nation bid a final farewell today to veteran actress Nkechi Nweje, who was laid to rest in her hometown of Onitsha, Anambra State.The solemn ceremony drew a large crowd of mourners, including prominent Nollywood figures and former Anambra State Governor, Mr. Peter Obi, highlighting the profound impact Nweje had on the entertainment landscape and beyond.

Nweje, aged 60, passed away on March 21, 2025, after a brief illness. Family sources confirmed her death was due to complications from a major stomach surgery she underwent in November 2024. Although she was reportedly healing well, she succumbed to the pains.

Known for her compelling portrayals of motherly figures, Nkechi Nweje carved a niche for herself in Nollywood, captivating audiences with her authentic performances. Born on June 6, 1964, in Onitsha, Anambra State, she was a devoted Christian and a mother of six, married to Dr. Azubuike Nweje. Her acting career saw her feature in numerous films, with “Ezigbo Nwanyi Onitsha” being widely credited as the movie that propelled her to fame. Other notable works include “Royal War,” “Festival of Sorrow,” and “Coming Back from Congo.”

Tributes have poured in from colleagues and fans alike since the announcement of her passing. Movie producer Stanley Ajemba, widely known as Stanley Ontop, confirmed her death on his Instagram page, expressing deep shock and describing Nweje as his “best friend and mentor.” Her ability to connect with fellow actors and infuse depth into her characters made her a cherished colleague in the industry.

The presence of Mr. Peter Obi at the funeral underscores Nweje’s standing and the respect she commanded, not just within the creative sector but also among political and social circles. Her passing leaves a void in Nollywood, but her legacy, marked by a rich filmography and heartfelt performances, will undoubtedly endure. She is survived by her husband and six children.
