“No Extra Charges”: Tunji-Ojo Clarifies Passport Intervention in UK

The Minister of Interior, Olubunmi Tunji-Ojo, has clarified that Nigerians in the United Kingdom applying for international passports under the ongoing special intervention exercise are not required to pay any charges beyond the official passport fees of $150 for five-year validity and $230 for ten-year validity.

The clarification followed concerns over inconveniences reportedly experienced by Nigerians in the UK.

Clarification Amid Concerns

In a statement issued on Monday, September 7, 2026, by his Special Adviser on Media and Publicity, Alao Babatunde, Tunji-Ojo clarified that applicants are not required to pay any charges beyond the officially approved passport fees.

The Official Fees

The minister stated that the exercise does not attract any extra charges beyond:

· $150 for a five-year validity passport

· $230 for a ten-year validity passport

“Neither the Ministry of Interior nor the Nigeria Immigration Service has introduced any other charges outside the aforementioned,” the statement said.

Addressing Inconveniences

The clarification follows concerns over inconveniences reportedly experienced by Nigerians in the UK during the application and processing of their passports.

Tunji-Ojo said consultations were ongoing with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs to address the challenges and ensure that the inconveniences did not persist.

The minister reiterated that the government remains committed to providing succour to Nigerians at home and abroad.

Applicants could also take advantage of the contactless biometric passport application system, which he described as seamless.
