At the third edition of ValidViewNetwork’s Monthly Global Discourse, Ambassador Dr. Yemi Farounbi and Prof. Samaila Mande delivered a blistering diagnosis of Nigeria’s self-inflicted image crisis, tracing its roots to a toxic label, a culture of broken promises, and a political class that sees office as harvest season.

Their verdict: you cannot out-communicate a broken promise, and you cannot out-market a politician who sees leadership as accumulation rather than service.

What does it mean when a citizen looks at his own country and sighs, “Nigeria has happened to me” ?

Is it resignation, indictment, or both?

That question, first raised at the second edition of ValidViewNetwork’s Monthly Global Discourse, refused to stay buried.

It resurfaced, sharper, angrier, more urgent, at the third edition, held virtually on Sunday, August 30, 2026, under the theme “Truth or Treason? Navigating the Thin Line Between National Critique and National Demarketing.”

Two men sat with that question and would not let it go: Ambassador Dr. Yemi Farounbi, the veteran broadcaster and diplomat, and Prof. Samaila Mande, the scholar-administrator. Between them, decades of watching Nigeria explain itself to Nigerians, and fail.

A Label That Was Never Ours

Somewhere along the line, corruption became “the Nigerian language.” Fraud became “how we do things here.”

The Distinguished Discussants would have none of it. If these vices were truly Nigerian, they argued, they would not appear in any dictionary as universal human failings, because they are exactly that: universal, not tribal, not national, not cultural.

This is the quiet danger of a label repeated often enough. It stops being an accusation and starts being an identity.

A people told for long enough that dishonesty is “in their blood” eventually stop being shocked by it, and a nation that stops being shocked by its own corruption has already lost the argument.

Nigeria, the Discourse insisted, must reject the label before the label finishes rejecting Nigeria.

When “Nigeria Happened to Me” Is Not an Excuse — It’s an Indictment

But labels do not fall from the sky.

They grow out of lived frustration, and few phrases capture that frustration better than the one this series has now carried across two editions:

“Nigeria has happened to me.”

The Discourse traced its roots with unusual precision, not to fatalism, but to something far more mundane and far more damning: broken Service Level Agreements.

· A promise made by an agency and not kept.

· A process that should take a day, hijacked by touts and middlemen who thrive precisely because the official channel failed.

· A citizen who did everything right and still lost, not to fate, but to a system that quietly agreed to fail him.

Disagreement between what government says it will deliver and what it actually delivers is not a footnote to national frustration; it is the engine of it.

The Discourse’s prescription was blunt: government agencies must be proactive, must eliminate the middlemen who profit from their inefficiency, and must be judged not by what they promise but by what they deliver.

Anything less, and “Nigeria has happened to me” will keep writing itself into the national vocabulary, one broken promise at a time.

The Mindset That Won’t Let Go

And yet, beneath the label and beneath the broken promises sits a third, older problem, the one the Discourse named without flinching: the average Nigerian politician’s appetite to amass wealth rather than render service.

Farounbi and Mande were unambiguous:

“Until that mindset changes, no amount of rebranding, no communication strategy, however brilliant, will hold.”

This is the uncomfortable truth this edition kept circling back to: you cannot out-communicate a broken promise, and you cannot out-market a politician who sees office as harvest season.

Leadership, the Discourse insisted, must be redefined, not as accumulation, but as service. Until Nigerians stop returning non-performing legislators to power year after year, the cycle simply repeats itself with new faces.

Three Threads, One Rope

Take the label that isn’t ours.

Take the frustration that has a name.

Take the mindset that refuses to change.

Pull them together, and a single rope emerges: Nigeria’s image crisis is not manufactured abroad, it is assembled at home, one mislabeled vice, one broken SLA, one self-serving politician at a time.

National demarketing does not need foreign enemies when the ingredients are homegrown.

This is why the Discourse’s warning against weaponising national weakness for partisan gain matters so much.

Criticism that names these three things

— the label, the broken promise, the mindset

— and offers a way out is diagnosis.

Criticism that merely repeats them for applause is demarketing.

Nigeria needs the former in abundance and can no longer afford the latter.

A Series, Not a Single Conversation

This edition did not arrive alone.

It stands on the shoulders of a first edition that confronted insecurity in Nigeria’s forests, and a second that first gave language to “Nigeria has happened to me.”

Each edition has refused to let one conversation end without pointing to the next fault line.

The third simply asked: now that we have named the wound, who is responsible for it, the citizen who speaks it, or the system that keeps causing it?

The Distinguished Discussants left no doubt.

Citizens have every democratic right to speak. But labels, broken promises, and self-serving leadership are not citizen inventions, they are the system’s own manufacture.

To criticise them, factually and with solutions attached, is not treason. It is the truth doing its job.

A Word from ValidViewNetworkValid

ViewNetwork expresses sincere appreciation to our Distinguished Discussants and participants for their invaluable insights and meaningful contributions to the discourse.

The fourth edition of the Monthly Global Discourse, scheduled for Sunday, September 27, 2026, will place another important topical issue on the front burner as ValidViewNetwork continues its commitment to evidence-based civic engagement and mindset renewal.

ValidViewNetwork Limited, founded by Dr Kayode Ogunjobi FHEA, FFAN, stands firmly on three strategic pillars — Media, Consultancy, and Advocacy — all working together to deliver credible news reporting, expert environmental and academic advisory services, and impactful public-interest advocacy.

Through this integrated structure, it advances evidence-based communication, sustainable development solutions, institutional strengthening, and community-focused interventions that promote environmental protection, academic excellence, and societal well-being.

So We Return to Where We Began

What does it mean when a citizen says “Nigeria has happened to me” ?

After this edition, the answer is clearer than before, it means a label was allowed to stick, a promise was allowed to break, and a mindset was allowed to stay.

Naming them is the first step. Changing them is the work that remains.
