Nigeria’s Power Minister, Dr. Adebayo Adelabu, has reassured citizens of imminent improvements in electricity supply during his Eid El-Fitr message on March 20, 2026. Despite persistent challenges like gas shortages and low generation—averaging around 4,000 MW recently—the government claims decisive interventions are yielding results.
Adelabu emphasized President Bola Tinubu’s reforms, including the Presidential Power Initiative (PPI) with Siemens, which has stabilized the national grid and reduced collapses seen in prior years. Phase 1 upgrades target key substations like Abeokuta and Sokoto, with some due by late 2026, while metering initiatives aim to end estimated billing for millions.
Concrete measures address gas supply constraints to thermal plants, a major bottleneck, with gradual enhancements expected soon. The ‘Light Up Nigeria’ project prioritizes industrial and rural areas via solar mini-grids, potentially reaching millions off-grid.
As of mid-March 2026, power generation hovered at 3,940-4,300 MW, with 16 of 33 plants offline due to gas issues—far below installed capacity. Adelabu urged patience, unity, and infrastructure protection from citizens, states, and businesses to sustain progress.
In his message, he stated: “Concrete measures are being implemented to ensure more reliable and sustainable electricity for homes, businesses, and industries. The reforms initiated by President Bola Tinubu are beginning to take root, and Nigerians will soon witness the full benefits”. These steps, building on 2025 gains, signal hope for a transformed sector powering economic growth.
