Castries, Saint Lucia – What began as a routine work assignment transformed into an unforgettable and inspiring encounter for Bob Chikwem Amadi, a Nigerian medical student, who met with President Bola Tinubu of Nigeria and Prime Minister Philip J. Pierre of Saint Lucia during President Tinubu’s ongoing state visit to the Caribbean nation.
Amadi, a student at the American International University in Saint Lucia, is currently preparing for the clinical phase of his medical training. His memorable encounter with the two leaders occurred on the second day of President Tinubu’s diplomatic visit to the island.
Working part-time as a talent and brand manager with a local catering and entertainment firm, Amadi was among the staff providing services during President Tinubu’s courtesy visit to the Prime Minister’s official residence. During the visit, Prime Minister Pierre was informed by his staff that a Nigerian student was part of the service team.
At the onset of their discussions, Prime Minister Pierre introduced Amadi, a native of Rivers State, to the Nigerian leader.
President Tinubu, demonstrating his renowned personal touch, paused to engage the young man, inquiring about his name, background, and well-being, and extending his best wishes for his studies and endeavors in Saint Lucia. The inspiring moment culminated with Amadi being invited for a group photograph with both prominent leaders.
“This is a very inspiring moment for me,” Amadi shared, reflecting on the experience. He described Saint Lucia as “an amazing island” and a “wonderful place,” noting its “very contented society” and relatively calm atmosphere.
Amadi, who has resided in Saint Lucia for ten years and has completed his four-year basic medical program, also touched upon the deep historical and cultural ties between Nigeria and Saint Lucia. “We have always hoped that there are many opportunities between Saint Lucia and Nigeria. We share similar food crops and culture, and the connection is deep,” he stated.
President Tinubu’s visit to Saint Lucia is part of a broader two-nation diplomatic tour that also includes Brazil. The Presidency has described this visit as a landmark diplomatic and cultural mission, aimed at rekindling Nigeria’s ancestral and strategic ties with the Caribbean nation and the wider CARICOM bloc. Saint Lucia holds significant historical links to West Africa, with Nigerian immigrants settling on the island in the mid-19th century and contributing to its cultural and religious landscape.

The visit aligns with Nigeria’s “Four D’s” foreign policy framework: Democracy, Development, Diaspora, and Demography. As the headquarters of the Organisation of Eastern Caribbean States (OECS) and a gateway to the 15-member CARICOM states, Saint Lucia is a crucial partner for deepening cooperation, economic partnerships, and cultural solidarity.
President Tinubu is also scheduled to address a special joint session of Saint Lucia’s Senate and House of Assembly and visit the Sir Arthur Lewis Community College to foster educational ties.
