
ANN ARBOR, MICHIGAN — In a landmark moment highlighting the growing footprint of African excellence on the global stage, Nigerian-American scholar Oluwami Dosunmu-Ogunbi has etched her name in history. She has officially become the first Black woman to earn a Ph.D. in Robotics from the prestigious University of Michigan.
Dosunmu-Ogunbi reached the historic milestone during the university’s College of Engineering convocation, where she delivered a powerful address reflecting on the communal effort behind her grueling academic voyage. As the daughter of Nigerian immigrants, she emphasized that monumental achievements are rarely accomplished in isolation.
“I do not stand here on my own two feet alone. None of us got here by our individual merit alone, whether it be teacher, friends, family, mentors, or role models, we each have one or multiple people to whom we are grateful for making this moment possible,” Dosunmu-Ogunbi told fellow graduates.
Overcoming Adversity and Fueling Innovation
Behind the historic distinction lies a story of profound resilience. Dosunmu-Ogunbi’s path to a doctoral degree was far from linear; she initially faced setbacks, including stumbling through qualifying exams early in her graduate tenure. However, buoyed by institutional mentors—including renowned robotics professor Jessy Grizzle—she navigated academic hurdles to specialize in dynamics, controls, and bipedal locomotion. Her cutting-edge research yielded significant advancements, including pioneering work on robust walking algorithms for underactuated bipedal robots.

Beyond her technical research, Dosunmu-Ogunbi distinguished herself as an ardent community builder and advocate for inclusivity. Her leadership and mentorship earned her the esteemed Martin Luther King Jr. (MLK) Spirit Award from the College of Engineering. She also served as a Robotics Outreach Ambassador for three consecutive years (2021–2023), mentored emerging STEM students, and was inducted into the prestigious Edward Alexander Bouchet Graduate Honor Society.
A Vision for Socially Conscious Engineering
Addressing the graduating class, Dosunmu-Ogunbi challenged her peers to view technology not merely as an exercise in scientific curiosity, but as a tool for societal betterment.
“A Michigan Engineer is one who does not just provide scientific and technological leadership, but is also one who is intellectually curious, socially conscious, creates collaborative solutions to societal problems, and promotes an inclusive and innovative community of service for the common good,” she asserted.
“We each have a solemn duty to make positive contributions to the world. Well, my reasons for becoming an engineer were initially frivolous, but they eventually moved into something more meaningful. I want to have a positive impact on the world.”
Having completed her doctoral milestones, Dosunmu-Ogunbi continues to pave the way for the next generation of diverse engineers, carrying forward a legacy defined by perseverance, representation, and technological leadership.
