SWANSEA, United Kingdom — The Nigerian and wider African diaspora communities in the United Kingdom have been thrown into mourning following the sudden peaceful passing of Kayode Ogunbodede, a well-known and active community member in Wales.
Ogunbodede, affectionately called “Kay” by friends and family, reportedly died in his sleep during the early hours of Tuesday, May 26, 2026, at his residence in Swansea, Wales.
The tragic incident has sent shockwaves through his local community, where he was highly regarded as a pillar of support and a devout Christian. Ogunbodede was an active worshipper and worker in both the Elim City Church in Swansea and the Redeemed Christian Church of God (RCCG).
He is survived by his wife, who is currently a non-working student, and two young daughters aged six years and six months.
In response to the tragedy, a wave of solidarity has built up online. A GoFundMe appeal has been launched by community leader Olatunde Owoeye-Phoster to rally financial and emotional support for the grieving young family left behind.

“Our lives changed in ways we cannot imagine when our brother, husband, and father, Kayode Ogunbodede, passed away suddenly in his sleep,” the statement read. “Kay was peaceful, calm, helpful, full of smiles, and always willing to lend a hand wherever he could. He was full of life and supported his family.”
The appeal also highlighted the precarious situation of his surviving wife, who is balancing the grief of losing her spouse with the immense pressure of being a student and a relatively new mother to a breastfeeding infant.
Members of the UK-Nigerian diaspora and church regular attendees have begun sharing tributes online, describing Ogunbodede as a gentle soul who epitomized the communal spirit of the African diaspora. Community leaders are urging the public to contribute generously to the welfare of the widow and her two young children during this incredibly challenging time.
