Messrs Leonardo’s Vice President, Mr. Claudio Sabatino, has reaffirmed the company’s commitment to delivering six M-346 fighter aircraft to Nigeria before the end of 2024.
This delivery marks the first batch of aircraft expected by the Nigerian Air Force as part of the acquisition of 24 M-346 fighter aircraft from Leonardo.
Mr. Sabatino conveyed this assurance during a visit to the Nigerian Air Force Headquarters on April 17, 2024.
The acquisition of these aircraft represents a significant step in the Nigerian Air Force’s efforts to modernize its fleet and enhance operational effectiveness.
The first batch of six M-346 fighter aircraft is expected to arrive in Nigeria by the end of the year, with subsequent deliveries scheduled in four trenches.
Mr. Sabatino emphasized the importance of further engagement between the Nigerian Air Force and Leonardo to finalize other aspects of the project, such as pilot and engineering training.
He also assured Air Marshal Hasan Abubakar, the Chief of Air Staff, that maintenance of the aircraft fleet would not pose a challenge, as there is a binding agreement for Leonardo’s maintenance support for a minimum of 25 years.

Mr. Sabatino highlighted the advanced state of manufacturing of the aircraft fleet and expressed confidence in the skill and expertise of the manufacturing process.
Air Marshal Abubakar commended the warm reception and expressed optimism about the future trajectory of the partnership.
He underscored the dual role of the M-346 fighter aircraft in enhancing training capabilities and operational effectiveness across various mission scenarios.
Additionally, Air Marshal Abubakar proposed the establishment of a dedicated Program Management Office to oversee all facets of the collaboration.
He reiterated the significance of Leonardo’s physical presence in Nigeria as a maintenance hub for African clientele and emphasized the need for close coordination to achieve shared objectives efficiently.
Both parties agreed on the importance of regular dialogue and collaboration, scheduling future meetings to discuss logistics, maintenance protocols, and configuration requirements in detail.
