Nigeria Mourns as First Professor of Linguistics, Ayo Bamgbose, Dies at 94

​The academic community has been thrown into deep mourning following the passing of Nigeria’s foremost language expert and intellectual colossus, Emeritus Professor Ayo Bamgbose, who died at the age of 94.

​His death was officially announced in the early hours of Saturday, July 25, 2026, by the Centre for Yoruba Studies at the University of Ibadan. Following the announcement, a condolence register has been opened at the institution to enable colleagues, former students, and admirers to pay their final respects to a titan of African scholarship.

​Born on January 27, 1932, in Odopotu, near Ijebu Ode in Ogun State, Professor Bamgbose carved an illustrious path as a true pioneer. After completing his foundational education at St. Andrew’s College, Oyo, and later bagging a Bachelor of Arts in English from University College Ibadan (then in special relationship with the University of London) in 1960, he proceeded to the University of Edinburgh. There, he earned his PhD in 1963 with a groundbreaking thesis titled A Study of Structures and Classes in the Grammar of Modern Yoruba.

​Returning to Nigeria, he joined the academic staff of the University of Ibadan in 1963, rising rapidly to become a full professor by 1968. In doing so, he etched his name into history as Nigeria’s—and Africa’s—first Professor of Linguistics.

​Over a career spanning several decades, Professor Bamgbose served the University of Ibadan in numerous administrative and academic capacities, including Head of the Department of Linguistics and African Languages, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, and ultimately earning the prestigious title of Professor Emeritus upon retirement.

​Beyond Nigerian shores, his intellectual footprint remained formidable. He held high-profile visiting professorships and fellowships at global institutions, including the University of Hamburg, Cambridge University, the University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign, and the University of Leipzig. His scholarly output—symbolized by seminal texts like Language and the Nation and Language and Exclusion—fundamentally shaped global discourse on language policy, bilingualism, and post-colonial national development.

​A decorated icon, Bamgbose was a recipient of the Nigerian National Order of Merit (NNOM)—the nation’s highest honor for academic achievement. He also shattered international glass ceilings, becoming the first African honorary member of the Linguistic Society of America (LSA) and serving as the foundation president of both the Nigerian Academy of Letters and the African Academy of Languages (ACALAN).

​Tributes have continued to pour in from cultural organizations, universities, and former mentees who remember him not only as an institutional builder, but as a passionate advocate for the preservation and elevation of indigenous African languages.

​Professor Bamgbose is celebrated for leaving behind a monumental legacy that redefined how African languages are studied, taught, and valued globally.
