According to a Washington Post report, an internal memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio outlines a proposal to restrict visas for citizens of 36 countries, including key US partners like Nigeria, Egypt and Ghana.
A New Travel Ban Proposal
ValidViewNetwork gathered that Nigeria has been listed among 36 countries in a US visa restrictions proposal, according to a report by the Washington Post.
An internal memo signed by Secretary of State Marco Rubio on Saturday outlines a proposal to restrict visas for citizens of the affected countries.
The proposed restrictions would affect key US partners like Egypt, Ghana, Djibouti and Nigeria.
A Familiar Pattern
The proposal echoes the travel bans implemented during President Donald Trump’s first term, which targeted several Muslim-majority countries.
Nigeria was previously included in a visa restriction policy in 2020 that affected immigrant visas for citizens of several African countries.
Potential Impact
If implemented, the restrictions could affect thousands of Nigerians seeking to travel to the United States for business, education, tourism or family reasons.
The proposal has raised concerns among Nigerian officials and civil society organisations.
A Lesson for Nigerian Youths
This development is a reminder that no country owes you a visa. The same politicians who will complain about US visa restrictions will never allow their own children to be affected, they have multiple passports and alternative travel arrangements.
For ordinary Nigerians, the lesson is clear: build a life that does not depend on foreign visas. The best insurance against a closed door is to build something worthwhile at home.
Build Nigeria. Demand better governance.
And never allow yourself to be dependent on the whims of foreign powers.
