The Speaker of the Niger State House of Assembly, Abdulmalik Sarkindaji, has clarified his decision to sponsor the wedding ceremonies of approximately 100 girls from his constituency in the Mariga Local Government Area.
He explained that these girls, who have reached marriage age, lack the means to fund their weddings, either due to being orphans or having parents who are financially challenged.
In a statement by his Senior Special Assistant on Media and Communications, Shamsudeen Binaira, the Speaker addressed concerns surrounding the announcement of sponsoring the weddings.
He emphasized that over half of the girls have suitors, but their parents are unable to meet the customary expenses associated with marriage.

Binaira stressed that many of these girls are orphans, including children of vigilantes who lost their lives to bandits, leaving them with no financial support for their weddings despite having suitors. He clarified that the girls are not being married against their will, and their suitors are of their choice.
According to Binaira, in the Hausa tradition, it is customary to provide essential items for the bride’s comfort in her husband’s house, such as furniture and kitchen utensils. As these girls lack these necessities, the Speaker has taken on the responsibility to provide for them, relieving their parents of this burden.
He further mentioned that the Speaker consulted extensively before making the decision to sponsor the weddings, aiming to support these girls and their families in celebrating this important milestone in their lives.
