Newlywed NAF Co-Pilot Dies in Ondo Crash Just 16 Days After Abuja Wedding

Squadron Leader Ahamefule Aham Man-Ugwueje, a co-pilot on the Nigerian Air Force ATR-42 aircraft that crashed in Ondo State on Monday, had been married for barely more than two weeks when tragedy struck.

Man-Ugwueje, identified by the NAF as Squadron Leader AP Man-Ugwueje, was one of five crew members and among the 25 people killed when the aircraft, registered NAF 931, went down in the swampy terrain of Igbokoda, Ilaje Local Government Area, near a naval base.

The plane was on a routine mission from Benin City, Edo State, to Lagos when air traffic controllers lost contact with it at about 9:13 a.m. on October 5. Search-and-rescue efforts, coordinated with other agencies, found no survivors.

The young officer had exchanged vows with fellow Nigerian Air Force officer Flight Lieutenant Damilola Adekunle on September 19, 2026, in an elaborate ceremony in Abuja. Their Holy Matrimony was held at the Redeemed Christian Church of God, The Masters Place, on Plot 826, Solomon Lar Way in Utako, opposite the NHIS Headquarters and Customary Court of Appeal. The reception followed at the Nigerian Army Conference Centre along the Km 10 Expressway in Asokoro.

Wedding photographs and videos shared by vendors, including Beejay Creates, captured the couple’s joy just days before the crash. Man-Ugwueje, whose Facebook profile listed Umuahia in Abia State as his hometown and Abuja as his current city, was the son of a retired Group Captain. His bride is also from a military family; one report identified her as the daughter of the late Wing Commander O.E. Adekunle. Both families have long records of service.

The NAF on Tuesday released the full list of those who died. The crew comprised Squadron Leader MI Aburime (Flight Captain), Squadron Leader AP Man-Ugwueje (Co-pilot), Flight Lieutenant IS Bako (Co-pilot), Warrant Officer Abubakar A (Aircraft Technician) and Corporal Uguru HC (Aircraft Technician). Among the 20 passengers were several other Air Force personnel of various ranks as well as six civilians.

Chief of the Air Staff Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke described the loss as a deeply painful moment for the service and the nation. He ordered a comprehensive investigation into the circumstances of the crash and opened a condolence register at NAF Headquarters in Abuja. Condolences have poured in from across the country for the families of all 25 victims, with particular sympathy expressed for Man-Ugwueje’s young widow and both families still adjusting to the sudden end of a newly begun marriage.

The aircraft, an ATR-42-500MP maritime patrol variant operated by the 81 Air Maritime Group based in Benin City, was one of the NAF’s assets used for intelligence, surveillance, reconnaissance and limited transport duties.

Early reports had suggested a higher number of people on board, but the Air Force confirmed the final figure of 25 with no survivors.

Man-Ugwueje’s death, coming so soon after he and his wife began their life together, has struck a particularly poignant note amid the broader national mourning for those lost in the line of duty.
