NECO Result: 804,948 Pass English and Maths, But Rate Falls From 2025

The good news is that hundreds of thousands of Nigerian students cleared the basic academic hurdle.

The less cheerful part is hidden in the percentage.NECO says 804,948 candidates, representing 58.67 per cent, obtained at least five credits including English Language and Mathematics in the 2026 SSCE.

A total of 1,371,992 candidates sat for the examination after 1,378,048 registered.

The comparable figure last year was 818,492 candidates, or 60.26 per cent. That means the pass rate fell by 2.64 percentage points.

At the same time, examination malpractice dropped sharply.NECO said 1,406 candidates were involved in reported malpractice cases, compared with 3,878 in 2025, a decline of 64.74 per cent.

That is a useful part of the story.

Nigeria often talks about examination performance as though the only measure is how many students passed.

But fewer malpractice cases matter too.

A cleaner examination does not automatically mean a better education system, but it makes the results more meaningful. The bigger challenge is what happens after the result.
