NDLEA Cracks Down on International Drug Cartel

In a major breakthrough, the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) has dismantled an international drug cartel operating across Nigeria, the UK, Brazil, Australia, and the UAE. The cartel, which trafficked narcotics concealed in textile materials and protected by local charms, was exposed in a two-week intelligence-led operation in Lagos, culminating in the arrest of three top kingpins.

The operation began on August 26, 2025, when NDLEA officers at Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, intercepted 76 cartons of textile materials destined for Sydney, Australia. A thorough search uncovered 16 blocks of cocaine weighing 17.9 kilograms cleverly hidden in lace materials alongside local charms believed to shield the shipment from detection. The seized cocaine, valued at over 5.3 million Australian dollars (approximately N5.3 billion), marked a significant disruption to the cartel’s activities.

Key arrests followed swiftly. Olashupo Michael Oladimeji, a freight agent involved in the conspiracy, was the first to be apprehended. Subsequent investigations led to the capture of Muaezee Ademola Ogunbiyi, the cartel’s operational leader in Nigeria, who was detained in Ikeja. A search of Ogunbiyi’s residence in Lekki yielded 10.9 kilograms of Canadian Loud cannabis and a double-barreled pump-action gun with cartridges. His background revealed a 14-year prison term in the UK for murder before his return to Nigeria eight years ago.

Another key figure, Shola Adegoke, was arrested at a location in Ikeja GRA used for packaging illicit drugs before shipment abroad. At the scene, NDLEA recovered 9.6 kilograms of cannabis and two vehicles linked to cartel operations. Investigations disclosed that the cartel’s global operations were orchestrated by Adebisi Ademola Omoyele, based in Dubai. Notably, Adegoke was deported from the UK in 2024 after serving a prison stint for methamphetamine-related offenses.

Further enforcement at Lagos airport saw the arrest of Gabriel Michael, attempting to smuggle 24,480 tramadol pills to Italy, with a street value estimated at 19,520 euros. Meanwhile, a joint NDLEA and Customs operation at the West Africa Container Terminal in Port Harcourt seized 160,200 bottles of codeine-based syrup hidden among ceramic sanitary ware, valued at over N1.1 billion.

The NDLEA’s crackdown highlights continued vigilance and success in combating narcotics trafficking networks in Nigeria, striking significant blows against organized crime with both international and domestic impacts.
