In a key diplomatic engagement at the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) headquarters in Abuja, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer Brig. Gen. Mohamed Buba Marwa (Rtd) CON, OFR, welcomed Senior Police Attaché Andrea Humphrys and Australian Police Liaison Officer Susan Gray on Wednesday, January 21, 2026. The courtesy visit by these top Australian Federal Police (AFP) officials marks a potential step toward stronger bilateral cooperation in combating transnational drug trafficking. Marwa, flanked by senior NDLEA directors, hosted the delegation to discuss mutual interests in disrupting illicit drug networks that span continents.

The meeting underscores NDLEA’s growing international outreach under Marwa’s leadership, which has prioritized partnerships since his appointment in 2021. Discussions centered on intelligence sharing, joint operations, capacity building, and targeting high-risk routes for narcotics like methamphetamine and cocaine, often routed through Africa to Australia. Both sides expressed commitment to enhanced collaboration, building on global anti-drug frameworks such as those led by the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC).

This interaction reflects Australia’s broader strategy to counter organized crime abroad, as the AFP maintains liaison offices in key regions including Pretoria, South Africa, to support such initiatives. NDLEA’s recent seizures of over 50 tons of drugs in 2025 highlight the urgency of these ties. The visit signals optimism for formal agreements that could bolster Nigeria’s role in global drug interdiction efforts.
