Operatives of the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency (NDLEA) arrested a businesswoman, Okolonkwo Ebere Theresa, on Sunday, September 14, 2025, at the Murtala Muhammed International Airport, Lagos, for attempting to smuggle 1.40 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed in her underwear.
According to a statement released on Sunday, September 21, by Femi Babafemi, Director of Media and Advocacy at NDLEA, the suspect was intercepted by Aviation Security officers of the Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN) in collaboration with NDLEA operatives at the Terminal 2 screening point.
During a meticulous search, security officials found two large parcels of a white crystalline substance carefully hidden inside the butt pad underwear of Ebere. Laboratory tests later confirmed that the substance was methamphetamine.
In her initial interrogation, the suspect stated that she conducts business in second-hand clothing and operates a Point of Sale (POS) business in Enugu. However, she admitted to being recruited into a drug trafficking network that coerced her into carrying the illicit substance.
This arrest forms part of a broader crackdown by NDLEA, which, alongside this operation, has also intercepted other drug shipments at the Lagos airport. On September 15, NDLEA operatives seized 2.30 kilograms of methamphetamine concealed within food items heading to Hong Kong. The agency also reported recovering cocaine concealed in phone chargers bound for New Zealand.
NDLEA continues to intensify its efforts to dismantle drug trafficking networks and secure Nigerian borders against the illicit drug trade. The agency reiterated its commitment to protecting the nation from the dangers of narcotics trafficking and called for public cooperation to combat the menace.
