The Nigerian Bar Association (NBA) has issued a strong condemnation of the treatment meted out to Ms. Comfort Emmanson during an incident aboard an Ibom Air flight on August 10, 2025, demanding immediate corrective actions and justice for the passenger.

According to the NBA, the forceful removal of Ms. Emmanson from the aircraft, including the public stripping of her clothing and the subsequent circulation of humiliating footage online, was utterly reckless and a flagrant violation of her fundamental right to human dignity. The association described these actions as degrading, illegal, and a serious departure from the civility expected in the aviation sector.

The incident reportedly started when Ms. Emmanson was asked to comply with standard safety protocols, including switching off her phone before take-off. Videos and reports have shown a violent altercation in which Ms. Emmanson physically assaulted cabin crew members and security personnel, leading to her forcible removal and arrest. The Airline Operators of Nigeria (AON) imposed a lifetime ban on her from Nigerian airlines following the incident, citing the severity of her actions as a threat to passenger and crew safety.

Despite these accounts, the NBA criticized the process leading to the ban as unlawfully heavy-handed and devoid of fairness. Ms. Emmanson was banned without being given a fair hearing or opportunity to respond, undermining the principles of due process and the rule of law. The NBA emphasized that only appropriate statutory authorities possess the power to suspend or restrict passenger rights, not private airlines or industry bodies acting unilaterally.

Moreover, the NBA condemned the sharing and publication of indecent images of Ms. Emmanson captured during the incident, labeling it a gross invasion of privacy and a potential criminal act. The association urged authorities to identify and prosecute all those responsible for distributing the footage.

The NBA called on Ibom Air to immediately revoke the lifetime ban, issue a public apology to Ms. Emmanson, and fully cooperate with an independent and impartial inquiry into the incident. It also urged the Minister of Aviation, Nigerian Civil Aviation Authority (NCAA), Federal Airports Authority of Nigeria (FAAN), and relevant security agencies to ensure a thorough investigation, hold culpable parties accountable, and enforce strict compliance with humane passenger treatment standards.

Furthermore, the NBA committed to providing pro bono legal support to Ms. Emmanson to safeguard her rights and seek redress for the violations she endured. The association made it clear that it will stand firm against any infringement of human dignity and lawful rights by any entity, whether governmental or private.

This call for justice comes amid public discussions over the handling of unruly passenger behavior in Nigeria’s aviation sector, balancing safety concerns with the protection of individual rights. The case of Ms. Emmanson underscores the urgent need for transparent procedures, fair hearings, and respect for human dignity in all facets of air travel.

The NBA’s intervention highlights the ongoing challenges facing Nigeria’s airlines and regulatory bodies in managing security and discipline onboard while adhering to constitutional rights and international aviation standards. It remains to be seen how authorities and Ibom Air will respond to these demands for justice and reform.
