The National Association of Nigerian Students (NANS) has published a list of 39 tertiary institutions across the country that have allegedly failed to reimburse students who had already paid their tuition fees before receiving disbursements from the Nigerian Education Loan Fund (NELFUND).

The association’s President, Akinteye Babatunde, announced the disclosure in a statement on Wednesday, emphasizing that these institutions have successfully received tuition payments from the government on behalf of eligible students but have yet to process the corresponding refunds for those who paid out-of-pocket.

Demand for Accountability

NANS stated that the primary objective of publicizing the list is to foster transparency and hold institutional management accountable. The student body warned that affected students should not be burdened with additional financial strain due to administrative delays, demanding that the management of these schools expedite the refund process immediately.

This move follows growing concerns regarding the implementation of the student loan scheme. Both NANS and the NELFUND management have recently expressed frustration over reports of delayed refunds, arbitrary tuition hikes, and discrepancies in disbursement records across various campuses. NELFUND has also confirmed that it is engaging with the affected institutions and regulatory authorities to ensure compliance and protect the integrity of the federal government’s education financing initiative.
