The naira needs sustained stability. It needs confidence. It needs stronger economic fundamentals. It needs increased productive capacity.

And it needs policies that can withstand the pressure of changing global and domestic economic conditions.

The real victory will not be one good week. It will be months and years of greater stability that businesses and households can actually plan around.

For now, though, the naira has ended the week on the right side of the ledger. It gained on Monday. It gained again on Tuesday. It stumbled on Wednesday. It recovered on Thursday.

And it finished Friday with another modest gain. Not spectacular. Not transformational.

But positive. And in the foreign exchange market, sometimes boring stability is exactly the kind of news you want.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the naira closed Friday at N1,346.49 to the US dollar at the official market, gaining N1.13 from Thursday’s rate.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the currency recorded only one day of depreciation during the week as it remained relatively stable amid ongoing CBN foreign exchange reforms.

The naira has ended the trading week on a stronger note, gaining marginally against the United States dollar at the official market.

The local currency closed Friday at N1,346.49 to the dollar, according to data published on the official website of the Central Bank of Nigeria.

That represents a N1.13 gain, or 0.08 per cent, compared with Thursday’s rate of N1,347.62 per dollar. It may not look like much.

In fact, N1.13 is hardly the kind of movement that will make anyone start dancing in the streets. But in Nigeria’s foreign exchange market, where every movement in the naira attracts attention, even a small gain tells part of a bigger story.

And this week’s story is one of relative stability.

A Week of Mostly Gains

The naira’s performance throughout the week was largely positive. It opened trading on Monday at N1,349.53 to the dollar and appreciated further on Tuesday.

Wednesday brought a slight reversal, with the currency recording a minimal 0.5 per cent depreciation.

But the setback did not last. The naira recovered on Thursday, gaining N2.79 against the dollar before extending that improvement on Friday.

By the close of trading, the currency had recorded only one day of depreciation during the week. That is a modest but notable performance for a currency that has experienced significant pressure and volatility in recent years.

What the Numbers Actually Tell Us

There is a temptation whenever the naira gains against the dollar to declare victory. That would be premature. One week of appreciation does not mean Nigeria’s foreign exchange challenges have disappeared.

It does, however, show that the currency has remained relatively stable during the week amid the Central Bank of Nigeria’s ongoing foreign exchange reforms.

The important word here is stability.

A healthier foreign exchange market is not simply about celebrating every naira gained. It is about creating conditions where businesses, investors, importers, exporters and ordinary Nigerians can make economic decisions without constantly wondering what the exchange rate will look like tomorrow.

Predictability matters. Why Nigerians Should Pay Attention

The exchange rate is not some abstract number that exists only on financial pages. It affects everyday life.

When the naira weakens significantly against the dollar, the effects can filter into the prices of imported goods, machinery, raw materials, medicines, technology and other products.

Businesses that depend on imported inputs feel the pressure. Consumers eventually feel it too.

That is why movements in the exchange rate often generate conversations far beyond the financial sector.

A stronger naira can ease some of those pressures, particularly when the improvement is sustained.

But the real benefit comes when exchange-rate stability is accompanied by stronger domestic production and broader economic improvements.

The CBN’s Reforms Remain Central

The naira’s relative stability comes as the CBN continues efforts to reform Nigeria’s foreign exchange market.

The objective of such reforms goes beyond producing a stronger exchange rate on a particular Friday.

The larger goal is to create a more transparent and efficient market, improve confidence and reduce the distortions that have historically complicated Nigeria’s foreign exchange system.

For the average Nigerian, however, the technical language of monetary policy ultimately comes down to a simple question: Is my money becoming more valuable, or is everything around me becoming more expensive?

That is the test that will ultimately determine how ordinary citizens experience any improvement in the foreign exchange market.

A Gain, But Not Yet a Victory Lap

Friday’s N1,346.49 closing rate is certainly better than Thursday’s N1,347.62. It is also better than Monday’s N1,349.53 opening rate.

But it would be wrong to turn a week’s performance into a declaration that Nigeria has permanently solved its currency problem.
