The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC) has conducted a major raid on over 20 shops and storage facilities along Agege Motor Road, Mushin, Lagos State, earlier this week. The operation by the Investigation and Enforcement Directorate resulted in the seizure of large quantities of banned codeine-based cough syrups and other controlled substances.
Thirteen shops were sealed for selling unregistered, expired, and banned products, including Dynamogen Oral Solution, Diazepam, Molly, Co-codamol, and Bromazepam. These substances pose serious health risks, potentially damaging vital organs such as the brain, liver, and kidneys, especially since their safety and efficacy cannot be guaranteed.
Codeine-containing cough syrups have been restricted in Nigeria due to their high potential for abuse, which can cause respiratory depression, hallucinations, and physical dependence. NAFDAC is collaborating with other agencies like the Pharmacist Council of Nigeria and the National Drug Law Enforcement Agency to curb the abuse and illegal distribution of these medicines.

This latest enforcement follows ongoing nationwide efforts by NAFDAC to eradicate unregistered, expired, and counterfeit drugs from open markets, safeguarding public health and enforcing regulatory compliance. The agency urges the public to report suspicious activities to the nearest NAFDAC office.
