A Nigerian Air Force (NAF) officer has etched his name in the annals of international military excellence by clinching the coveted BAE Systems Trophy at the Royal Air Force (RAF) College Cranwell in the United Kingdom. Pilot Officer YB Usman, a direct short service commissioned officer hailing from Kaduna State, topped the professional studies category during the Passing Out Parade of Modular Initial Officer Training Course No. 38 on December 18, 2025.
The BAE Systems Trophy, sponsored by the British aerospace giant since 2007, honors the RAF or international cadet achieving the highest marks in core professional subjects across the demanding 26-week program. This modular course, which Pilot Officer Usman joined on May 17, 2025, rigorously tests cadets in leadership, military law, aviation fundamentals, and operational tactics amid a diverse cohort of British and global trainees. Usman’s triumph highlights NAF’s rising stature on world-class training platforms.
Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sunday Kelvin Aneke, hailed the feat as a testament to NAF’s training rigor. “This outstanding performance by Pilot Officer YB Usman reflects the quality of training, discipline, and values instilled in our officers,” Aneke stated in an official release. He emphasized that such global accolades bolster confidence in NAF’s youth excelling under pressure while upholding unwavering professionalism.
The ceremony drew high-profile Nigerian representation, including Brigadier General T Ahmed, Director of Military Training at the Nigerian Defence Academy (NDA); Group Captain MS Wakili, Nigeria’s Deputy Defence Attaché to the UK; and Squadron Leader KO Ettah, NDA Assistant Adjutant. Their presence underscored the milestone’s national importance.
