Mystery Methane: Ogun Schools Evacuated as Gas Emissions Spark Alarm

A fresh wave of concern swept through Ogun State as the government moved swiftly to protect students following a mysterious chemical inhalation incident that has now occurred twice in the same cluster of schools. The sudden relocation of students has raised urgent questions about what lies beneath the affected grounds and why the emissions appear synchronized across multiple locations.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the Ogun State Government has temporarily evacuated students of Our Lady of Apostles Girls Grammar School, Ijebu‑Ode, to a safer alternative facility as investigations intensify.

According to the governor, the relocation was a necessary emergency measure to protect students, teachers, and staff while giving experts unrestricted access to conduct a full‑scale investigation. He explained that the state is working closely with the Ministries of Environment and Health, the Nigerian Midstream and Downstream Petroleum Regulatory Authority (NMDPRA), and the Department of Geology at Olabisi Onabanjo University to uncover the root cause of the contamination.

The governor revealed the disturbing pattern behind the incidents: “Twice now, we have recorded cases of pollution in this school and some neighbouring schools. What is interesting is that the gas pollution occurred at about the same time in the affected schools about three schools altogether and this has happened on two separate occasions.”

He added that after the first incident, the government installed gas analysers across the schools to identify the substance involved. “Following the first occurrence, we installed gas analysers across the schools to determine the nature and concentration of the gas, which has now been confirmed to be methane,” ValidViewNetwork reports

Early scientific observations point toward a geological explanation. “Preliminary findings suggest there may be geological factors involved, possibly fault lines common to these locations, which could be responsible for the emissions. We are awaiting the final report from the professionals handling the investigation,” he said.

ValidViewNetwork reports that Governor Abiodun reaffirmed his administration’s commitment to safeguarding the lives of students and residents, stressing that every necessary step will be taken to prevent a recurrence. Addressing circulating rumours, the governor dismissed claims that the incidents were targeted attacks on schools. “In the meantime, we have evacuated the students from the school. The rumour that these incidents are being deliberately targeted at schools is unfounded and should be disregarded. This appears to be a natural occurrence, and we are determined to get to the bottom of it.”

He emphasized that students will not return until the environment is fully certified safe. “The students have been moved out temporarily, and until we are satisfied that the environment is completely safe and conducive for learning, they will not return. We will continue to investigate the cause of this situation and take all necessary steps to address it,” the governor added.
