Lagos State’s Ministry of Waterfront Infrastructure Development (MWID) has etched its name in the annals of public service excellence, securing a prestigious award at the Lagos State Government’s Ideas Day Innovation Competition on December 11, 2025. This milestone victory marks the ministry’s first such recognition since its establishment in 2020, sparking widespread jubilation among its team.
The award, presented by the Office of Transformation, Creativity and Innovation (OTCI), celebrates MWID’s innovative entry that showcased practical solutions for sustainable waterfront projects. Officials highlighted the ministry’s “exemplary dedication and public-spiritedness” in driving creativity across Lagos’ public sector. According to OTCI announcements and Lagos State reports, MWID’s project stood out among dozens of submissions from various agencies, emphasizing tech-driven infrastructure to combat coastal erosion and enhance urban waterfronts—a pressing need in Nigeria’s commercial hub facing rising sea levels.

Hon. Dayo Bush-Alebiosu, the Honourable Commissioner for Waterfront Infrastructure Development, received the certificate amid applause. “This is a testament to our collective ingenuity,” he stated, crediting the entire staff. Alebiosu, appointed in 2023 under Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu’s administration, has spearheaded initiatives like the ongoing Omi-Agege and Ilaje-Bariga waterfront renewal projects, which align with the state’s THEMES+ agenda for sustainable development.
In a parallel celebration, MWID rolled out the red carpet for seven exceptional staff members from junior and senior ranks. These officers earned Certificates of Recognition for their standout innovation, professionalism, and unwavering commitment throughout 2025. The commissioner personally handed over the awards, praising their role in advancing the ministry’s mandate to deliver resilient waterfront infrastructure amid Lagos’ rapid urbanization.

“This recognition fuels our drive for excellence,” Alebiosu remarked, urging sustained teamwork. He spotlighted the need for creativity in tackling challenges like flooding and illegal structures along waterways. Permanent Secretary Engr. Wasiu Adebayo Olayinka echoed this, calling on all staff to “give their absolute best” in service to Lagosians.

The dual events underscore MWID’s synergy with Governor Sanwo-Olu’s vision for a transformed public service. As Lagos eyes further expansion of its 1,000+ kilometers of waterways, such innovations promise enhanced livability and economic growth. Staff morale is reportedly at an all-time high, with expectations for more accolades in 2026.
