The University of Calabar Teaching Hospital, UCTH, has announced plans to conduct a mass burial of abandoned and unclaimed corpses in its mortuary, citing severe congestion and pressure on available facilities.

The hospital has given relatives and depositors until October 21, 2026 to identify and recover affected bodies.

After the deadline, UCTH said the unclaimed corpses will be evacuated for mass burial without further notice.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the hospital’s decision follows the prolonged retention of bodies that have remained in the mortuary beyond the statutory 90-day period allowed for them to be claimed.

WHY THE HOSPITAL IS TAKING THE STEP

The hospital said the exercise has become necessary because of serious congestion in its mortuary. According to management, several corpses have remained in the facility beyond the statutory 90-day period from the date they were deposited without being claimed by relatives or the persons who deposited them.

The continued retention has placed considerable pressure on available mortuary space and facilities.

Management said the situation is affecting efficient service delivery and the hospital’s ability to maintain proper standards of mortuary care.

The hospital acknowledged that dealing with unclaimed human remains is sensitive and emotionally difficult. It nevertheless said the evacuation is necessary to restore proper mortuary management.

THREE-WEEK WINDOW FOR FAMILIES

The hospital has effectively given affected families and depositors a three-week window.

The deadline is October 21, 2026.

The management is urging anyone who may have deposited a body at the mortuary, or who believes a deceased relative may be among the unclaimed corpses, to immediately approach the hospital.

The affected persons are expected to identify the deceased and complete the necessary procedures for recovery.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the notice is not simply directed at families who have lost contact with relatives; it specifically calls on depositors and relatives of deceased persons whose bodies have remained unclaimed in the mortuary to act before the deadline.

SOME BODIES REPORTEDLY THERE FOR YEARS

The situation has taken on an especially troubling dimension because some of the bodies have reportedly remained in the mortuary for exceptionally long periods.

According to UCTH, some of the unclaimed corpses had been in the facility for more than 10 years. The hospital’s notice, however, is focused on bodies that have remained unclaimed beyond the statutory 90-day period.

TASK FORCE SET UP

The announcement came as the hospital moved to establish a mechanism for clearing the backlog. The Chief Medical Director of UCTH, Prof. Ikpeme Ikpeme, disclosed the deadline in Calabar during the inauguration of a task force saddled with the responsibility of evacuating unclaimed corpses.

He was represented at the event by the Deputy Chairman of the Medical Advisory Committee in charge of Clinical Services, Dr Stephen Ogbudu.

The task force is expected to oversee the process of identifying affected bodies and ensuring that the hospital’s deadline is implemented.

HOSPITAL APPEALS FOR UNDERSTANDING

UCTH management said it recognises the emotional and sensitive nature of mass burial. It therefore appealed to members of the public to understand the circumstances that led to the decision.

Management also urged families not to wait until the final days of the deadline before taking action. The objective, according to the hospital, is to decongest the mortuary and improve service delivery. The hospital said it sympathises with families and loved ones who may be affected by the exercise.

WHAT HAPPENS AFTER OCTOBER 21?

The hospital has been explicit about what will happen if affected bodies remain unclaimed.

According to the public notice, all unclaimed corpses after October 21, 2026, will be evacuated for mass burial without further notice.

The warning is intended to give families a final opportunity to identify and recover their deceased relatives.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the hospital has not publicly stated in the reports reviewed how many corpses are currently affected by the proposed exercise.

The immediate concern is therefore the deadline and the need for relatives or depositors who may have unclaimed bodies at the facility to establish contact with the hospital before the date expires.

The announcement highlights the difficult balance between humane handling of deceased persons and the practical limits of hospital mortuary facilities.

Families who may have lost contact with a deceased relative should use the three-week window to make inquiries rather than risk missing the deadline.

For the hospital, transparent identification procedures and clear communication with families will be important as the exercise proceeds, particularly given the emotional nature of dealing with unclaimed human remains.
