Abeokuta, Ogun State – In preparation for the 22nd National Sports Festival (NSF), Ogun State Governor Dapo Abiodun has officially renamed the MKO Abiola Stadium in Abeokuta to the MKO Abiola Sporting Complex. The announcement was made ahead of the festival, scheduled to take place from May 16th to 30th, 2025 across various venues in the state.
Governor Abiodun explained that the renaming reflects the facility’s significant transformation from a basic stadium into a comprehensive sports complex. Extensive upgrades have been carried out, including:A brand-new, world-class pitch

2.A new international-standard track
3.Modern scoreboards and digital floodlights
4. An Olympic-size swimming pool and a warm-up pool
5.Tennis, basketball, and handball courts
“It is no longer just a pitch and a track,” the Governor stated during a meeting with the Guild of Sports Editors in Abeokuta. “All these developments rightly make it a sporting complex.”
The official renaming ceremony will occur as part of the lead-up to the NSF. The governor also acknowledged the substantial financial investment in hosting the games, expressing gratitude for the support from public and private sector partnerships, as well as the unprecedented backing from the Federal Government and President Bola Tinubu.
Ogun State aims to dominate the medals table, but Governor Abiodun emphasized the inclusive spirit of the games. Over 10,000 athletes and officials will be housed in a Games Village at Babcock University, ensuring their safety and well-being. The state is prioritizing security for all participants, spectators, and residents.
The successful bid for the NSF has already boosted the state’s economy, with hotels fully booked and local businesses experiencing increased activity. Governor Abiodun also revealed that the Confederation of African Athletics (CAA) has selected Ogun State to host the 2025 U-18 and U-20 African Championships.
The Ogun State Commissioner for Sports Development, Wasiu Isiaka, has expressed confidence in the state’s 742 athletes, who are currently in intensive training. The state aims to set a new benchmark for the National Sports Festival, showcasing its commitment to sports development and youth engagement.
