Miliband Defies Chief Rabbi as UK Unveils Sweeping West Bank Sanctions

​Foreign Secretary Ed Miliband has robustly defended Britain’s landmark decision to impose sweeping sanctions on Israeli settlements in the occupied West Bank, pushing back against fierce criticism from Chief Rabbi Sir Ephraim Mirvis and an escalating diplomatic fallout with Israel.

​Speaking following an announcement in Parliament coordinated alongside France, Canada, and ten other international allies, Miliband rejected assertions from the Chief Rabbi that the measures would endanger British Jews. Sir Ephraim had earlier branded the policy a “dark day for British Jews,” warning that it risked emboldening those who use antisemitism as a weapon.

• ​Targeted Measures: Immediate sanctions against extremist settlers implicated in orchestrating or inciting violence against Palestinian communities.

​Miliband pointed to the controversial E1 settlement expansion plans and rampant settler violence, which he argued amounted to forced displacement and effectively rendered a viable two-state solution impossible.

​The measures have triggered an immediate and furious response from Benjamin Netanyahu’s government. In retaliation, Israel ordered the closure of the British consulate in East Jerusalem, suspended British participation in regional security coordination frameworks, and imposed strict entry limitations on UK diplomatic officials.

​While acknowledging that Jerusalem’s retaliatory steps would prove damaging, Miliband stressed that the government had carefully weighed the costs and remained convinced the sanctions were necessary.
