Milei to UN: You’re Useless — and Argentina Is Coming for the Falklands

The United Nations got another visitor with a complaint.

Only this time, the complaint came with the volume turned up.

Argentine President Javier Milei walked into the 81st UN General Assembly on Wednesday and delivered something closer to an institutional performance review than a diplomatic speech.

His verdict?

The organisation has failed. Not just on the Falkland Islands. Not just on one war or one resolution.

On the very purpose for which the UN was created.

Milei called the United Nations a “useless organisation” that had become a home for what he described as a caste of “fatally arrogant parasites” disguised as well-intentioned bureaucrats.

And then he explained why. His 20-minute address ranged from the Falklands and Israel to Iran, human rights, terrorism, the COVID-19 pandemic, climate policy and artificial intelligence.

The Falklands dispute simply happened to be where the speech became most personal for Argentina.

Milei’s Three-Point Indictment

Milei said he wanted to address three things.

First, what the UN should have done but failed to do.

Second, what it should not have done but did anyway.

Third, how it should respond to artificial intelligence.

That structure is important because it shows that the speech was never intended to be merely another Argentine complaint about the Falklands.

Milei was questioning the broader international system. He argued that the UN was created to defend international law, national sovereignty and peaceful cooperation between states.

But, in his view, that original “sacred pact” had been broken. His criticism was blunt: an institution created to prevent chaos had, according to him, failed to prevent chaos.

‘Those Who Break the Rules Face No Consequences’

Milei’s central complaint was not simply that the UN makes decisions he dislikes. It was that those decisions often have no consequences.

He argued that countries which follow international rules receive little reward, while those that break them can escape meaningful punishment.

That argument became the bridge to his Falklands complaint. Because, in Milei’s telling, the Malvinas dispute represents a test of whether UN resolutions actually mean anything.

He accused the organisation of looking away while Britain and companies involved in offshore oil exploration move ahead with activities Argentina considers unlawful.

The Argentine president said his government would not continue waiting indefinitely for the UN to act.

For Argentina, the Falkland Islands are the Malvinas. Milei called them a “national cause” and argued that the dispute is about more than territory.

It is, he said, also a test of the credibility of the international system. Argentina has objected to the Sea Lion offshore oil project in the North Falkland Basin, involving UK-listed Rockhopper Exploration and Israel-based Navitas Petroleum.

Buenos Aires argues that oil exploitation around the islands violates the spirit of a 1976 UN resolution calling on Argentina and Britain to avoid unilateral action while the sovereignty dispute remains unresolved.

Milei said Argentina had begun sanctions proceedings against more than 60 companies and individuals linked to the drilling project.

Then came the warning.Argentina, he said, would not simply sit around waiting for the UN and the wider international community to fulfil their mandate.

“We’re going to take matters into our own hands,” he said. That does not amount to a declaration of military action. Milei presented Argentina’s approach as peaceful, practical and based on diplomatic, legal and economic measures.

He also called on Britain to resume negotiations over sovereignty.

Britain rejects Argentina’s sovereignty claim and maintains that the Falkland Islanders have the right to determine their own future.

In a 2013 referendum, 99.8 per cent of participating voters chose to remain a British overseas territory.

Milei’s Argument About Israel and Iran

The Argentine president then widened his attack. He accused the UN system of applying its human-rights principles inconsistently.

Milei criticised what he described as the organisation’s treatment of Israel and accused it of failing to respond adequately to terrorism and abuses elsewhere.

He also highlighted Argentina’s confrontation with Iran.

Milei’s government has strongly aligned itself with Israel and the United States and has designated Iran’s Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps a terrorist organisation.

At the UN, he presented that position as part of Argentina’s broader alignment with the West.

His argument was essentially that international institutions cannot claim to defend human rights while, in his view, applying those principles selectively.

Those are political arguments advanced by Milei, rather than findings accepted by all UN members.

He Also Went After the Pandemic

Milei’s criticism did not stop at wars and sovereignty. He questioned the role of international institutions during the COVID-19 pandemic.

He used the experience to argue against what he sees as excessive state intervention and international bureaucracy.

That fed into one of the strongest ideological themes of the speech: freedom versus institutional control.

Milei argued that governments and international organisations should be extremely careful about expanding their authority in the name of solving global problems.

That same philosophy appeared again when he reached his final major subject.

Artificial intelligence. From the Falklands to Artificial Intelligence

The change of subject was almost cinematic. One moment Milei was talking about disputed islands in the South Atlantic.

The next, he was talking about the future of machines.

Milei strongly rejected what he sees as attempts to place heavy preventive restrictions on AI development.

Instead, he wants Argentina to become one of the world’s most competitive locations for AI. He pointed to Argentina’s critical minerals, energy resources, talent and technological potential, arguing that the country has the ingredients to compete throughout the AI value chain.

His government, he said, wants a legal framework that encourages development rather than restricting the technology before its potential is understood.

His message was straightforward: Do not regulate tomorrow’s technology today because you are afraid of what it might become.

Milei described AI as a potential accelerator of productivity, economic growth and employment, rather than simply a threat to jobs.

That was perhaps the most forward-looking part of a speech otherwise dominated by old disputes and institutional grievances.

Argentina, Trump and the WestMilei also used the UN podium to reinforce Argentina’s relationship with the United States.

He described Argentina’s government as firmly aligned with the West and emphasised its affinity with both Washington and Israel.

That positioning matters because Milei has increasingly built his foreign policy around close relations with the Trump administration.

It also gives his Falklands strategy a new diplomatic backdrop. Trump has recently suggested that Washington’s traditional neutral position on the Falklands could be reconsidered, although the United States has not endorsed Argentina’s sovereignty claim.

Milei therefore has a potentially important ally in Washington. But Britain has made clear that it will defend the Falkland Islanders’ right to self-determination and their status as a British overseas territory.

The Speech Was Really About Power

Strip away the Falklands, the insults and the AI pitch, and Milei’s speech comes down to one question: Who gets to decide the rules of the international system, and what happens when those rules are ignored?

For Milei, the UN has accumulated too much authority while failing to deliver enough results.

The Falklands are his evidence.Israel and Iran are his evidence. The pandemic and international regulation are his evidence. Artificial intelligence is where he offered his alternative.

Less bureaucracy. More national sovereignty. More room for private innovation.

And an Argentina that wants to compete rather than simply comply.

The irony was hard to miss. Milei stood inside the very institution he accused of being useless, used its biggest microphone to denounce it, then asked that same international community to recognise Argentina’s claim over the Falklands.

Diplomacy can be strange.

Sometimes the loudest complaint is delivered from the biggest stage available. And on Wednesday, Milei certainly made sure nobody missed his. ValidViewNetwork reports.
