Midnight Terror: Retired Warrant Officer Survives Karshi Kidnapping Raid

​ABUJA — The quiet fringes of Nigeria’s Federal Capital Territory (FCT) have once again been thrust into the spotlight of insecurity following a harrowing midnight invasion in Karshi, which left a retired military veteran nursing gunshot wounds and a community gripped by fear.

​Retired Nigerian Army Master Warrant Officer Michael Eneware is recounting an extraordinary tale of survival after being shot in the chest at close range by armed kidnappers during a house-to-house raid in the early hours of July 29. Eneware, a public relations professional whose military career included stints at the Directorate of Army Public Relations and the Nigerian Army War College, believes his military background and sheer resolve are the only reasons he lived to tell the tale.

​The assault began shortly after 1:00 a.m., when a heavily armed gang breached the neighborhood. Utilizing an unfinished perimeter fence for cover, the intruders forced their way into Eneware’s compound, firing rounds into the air, smashing doors, and systematically ransacking the property. While his wife and children managed to evade capture by hiding within the home, Eneware and a neighbor were dragged into the surrounding bush under the threat of guns, machetes, and cutlasses.

​As the captors marched their hostages through dense vegetation, the grueling pace took a severe physical toll on Eneware. Exhausted and unable to continue walking, he informed his abductors that he could go no further. After enduring physical blows from an iron rod, the assailants shot him in the chest at close range, presuming him dead. They abandoned his body in the brush and fled with his neighbor.

​Left for dead and suffering from massive blood loss, Eneware regained consciousness hours later. Displaying immense grit, he crawled and walked toward nearby residences. Initial hesitation from terrified residents—cautious of lingering attackers—soon gave way to relief as local youths and security personnel were dispatched to rescue him.

​Eneware was rushed initially to the Nigerian Army Hospital before being transferred to the National Hospital in Abuja for critical surgical and medical care. His abducted neighbor has since regained freedom following the reported payment of a ransom.

​Reflecting on the audacity of the assault, Eneware expressed shock that such criminal elements could operate with impunity in an area long perceived as a safe haven. He warned that the attackers had meticulously mapped out the terrain, exploiting local geography for seamless entry and escape routes.

​In the wake of the raid, local homeowners have rushed to upgrade domestic security infrastructure, investing in surveillance cameras, enhanced exterior lighting, and fortified perimeter barriers.
