LAGOS — Tragedy struck the Alakija area of Lagos State on Thursday morning when a three-storey building suddenly collapsed, trapping an unspecified number of occupants and workers beneath the heavy debris.
According to terrified eyewitnesses, the structural failure occurred at approximately 11:40 AM on June 25, 2026. The sudden cave-in sent shockwaves through the neighborhood, with onlookers rushing toward the site in a desperate attempt to locate survivors. Plumes of dust covered the area as residents began pulling away lighter pieces of rubble with bare hands.
As of midday, official rescue operators and emergency response teams had yet to arrive at the scene of the disaster. Anxious family members and neighbors gathered around the perimeter, listening intently for voices or signs of life muffled beneath the shattered concrete slabs.
Incidents of structural failure remain a recurring issue in the metropolitan state. Just earlier this June, a similar partial collapse of a three-storey building under construction on Josephine Fingesi Street in Lekki Phase 1 claimed one life and left another missing, while seven others were rescued by the Lagos State Emergency Management Agency (LASEMA). Additionally, the Lagos State Building Control Agency (LASBCA) recently carried out controlled demolitions on distressed structures, including a sinking six-storey building in Ikoyi, in an effort to preemptively protect lives.
Local community leaders at the Alakija site are urgently calling on LASEMA, the Lagos State Fire and Rescue Service, and medical teams to deploy heavy earth-moving equipment and emergency personnel to the scene to expedite rescue operations before it is too late.
