An investigation is underway after a man in his 40s was struck and killed by a train on Thursday morning, less than an hour after staging a violent escape from a stationary custody van on the A1(M).

The incident, which triggered a massive emergency response and caused hours of travel chaos across the regional rail network, has been referred to the UK’s police watchdog.

The Escape and Altercation

The drama began shortly after 9:00 am on Thursday, May 28, as a private transport contractor’s vehicle was conveying the detainee from the custody suite at Stevenage Police Station to a scheduled court appearance.

According to a joint statement issued by Hertfordshire Constabulary and the British Transport Police (BTP), the vehicle pulled over onto the hard shoulder of the A1(M) southbound carriageway between Junction 7 (Stevenage) and Junction 6 (Welwyn). While the van was stationary, a violent altercation erupted inside the secure cabin.

During the struggle, the detainee managed to overpower staff and break free from the vehicle. Two security guards sustained injuries during the fracas and were subsequently taken to the hospital by ambulance. Their injuries are not believed to be serious.

Fatal Railway Incident

Hertfordshire Police immediately launched an extensive area search, deploying multiple units, dog handlers, and coordinating with transit authorities to track down the fugitive.

However, the manhunt came to a tragic end roughly 40 minutes later. At approximately 9:40 am, emergency services received urgent reports of a casualty on the East Coast Main Line tracks near Welwyn North railway station.

First responders rushed to the scene, but the man was pronounced dead at the trackside. Officials have since confirmed that he was struck by a moving Thameslink train.

While formal identification has yet to take place, Hertfordshire Police confirmed that the deceased is the escaped detainee and that his immediate family has been notified. A file is currently being prepared for the coroner.

Eyewitness Accounts and Commuter Chaos

The massive influx of emergency personnel stunned local residents in the quiet village of Digswell, which sits adjacent to Welwyn North station. David Elsdon, 82, described the sudden disruption:

”We were just out the front ready to leave for the town and inundated with a number of police cars coming along. I think we passed 10 in total before we got out onto the main road. It was all a bit of a shock.”

The incident caused severe, widespread disruptions to rail services across Hertfordshire, Cambridgeshire, and London. Major operators, including London North Eastern Railway (LNER), Thameslink, and Great Northern, were forced to completely block lines between Stevenage and Welwyn Garden City for several hours while forensic teams worked on the tracks.

Watchdog Investigation Launched

Because the fatality occurred directly after an escape from legal custody, Hertfordshire Constabulary has self-referred the matter to the Independent Office for Police Conduct (IOPC).

The independent watchdog will investigate the circumstances surrounding the prisoner’s transit, how he managed to break free from the secure van, and the protocol followed by the private transport contractors.

Police personnel and BTP investigators remain in the area as initial inquiries continue. Anyone with information regarding the movements of the man between 9:00 am and 9:40 am along the A1(M) or the railway line is urged to contact authorities.
