KANSAS CITY, Mo. — A Kansas City man faces felony charges following a fatal residential fire that claimed the life of his mother.
Ryan Willis, 36, has been charged with second-degree murder and first-degree arson. The charges stem from an incident last week where emergency responders arrived at the scene following reports of an active blaze. Fire crews recovered Shirley Willis from the interior of the structure, but life-saving measures were unsuccessful.
According to statements from investigators, the victim’s husband reported receiving motion notifications from a security camera system indicating activity on the front porch prior to the emergency response. Witnesses in the immediate area reported hearing calls for assistance from inside the residence as the fire escalated.
