TikTok Influencer Publicly Executed in Mali Amid Security Crisis

In a shocking incident that underlines the escalating insecurity in Mali, Mariame Cissé, a TikTok influencer known for posting videos supporting the Malian military, was abducted and publicly executed by armed men. The abduction occurred on Friday at a weekly market in Echel, a village near Timbuktu, and the following day she was taken to Independence Square in Tonka where she was executed in front of a crowd, according to Yehia Tandina, the mayor of Timbuktu. The mayor of Tonka confirmed the killing but provided no further details.

Cissé, who was not a member of the military but occasionally shared images of herself in military fatigues, had more than 140,000 followers on TikTok. It is believed that her online support for the military drew the attention of armed groups. She had reportedly received death threats prior to her abduction.

Tonka is located on the Niger River and lies roughly in the center of Mali, an area where the al-Qaeda affiliated group Jama’at Nusrat ul Islam wa al Muslimin (JNIM) is known to operate. No group has claimed responsibility for the killing, but JNIM militants have been responsible for numerous attacks and kidnappings in the region over the past decade.

Mali has been battling armed groups since 2012, with insecurity worsening significantly following military coups in 2020 and 2021. The current armed conflict involves economic warfare tactics such as blockades imposed by JNIM, including a two-month long fuel blockade that has severely impacted the country. JNIM’s insurgency has expanded from northern regions to broader parts of the country, threatening the government’s authority and stability.
