The Governor of Oyo State, Engineer Seyi Makinde, has cut short his annual leave to personally oversee the historic coronation of the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, a significant cultural milestone for the state. The Oyo State House of Assembly has officially received and approved the governor’s notice of early resumption, acknowledging his commitment to this culturally important event.
Originally scheduled to be on leave from August 29 to September 29, 2025, Governor Makinde informed the House of Assembly of his decision to resume duty on September 26, 2025. This decision was made in recognition of the historic and culturally rich ceremony marking the crowning of Oba Ladoja, which will take place at the iconic Mapo Hall grounds in Ibadan. The Assembly, presided over in this instance by Deputy Speaker Hon. Muhammad Abiodun Fadeyi on behalf of the Speaker Rt. Hon. Adebo Ogundoyin, commended the governor for his dedication to preserving and honoring the heritage of Ibadanland.
During the plenary session, Governor Makinde expressed gratitude to his Deputy, Barrister Bayo Lawal, who served as Acting Governor during his absence, and reaffirmed that the Deputy Governor would now return to his substantive role. Members of the House lauded Governor Makinde’s leadership and his proactive approach to ensuring a successful coronation event.
The coronation of Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja is an event of immense traditional and spiritual significance, marking the ascension of the 44th Olubadan—a role that holds the highest custodianship of Ibadan’s culture and kingdom. The coronation ceremony is part of a week-long celebration filled with religious prayers, cultural festivities, scholarly lectures, and thanksgiving services.
In addition to senior political figures, including President Bola Tinubu who is expected to attend, thousands of Ibadan indigenes and visitors from across Nigeria will gather to witness this momentous occasion. Security arrangements have been robustly planned, with over 2,000 security personnel deployed to ensure a peaceful and orderly event.
Governor Makinde’s early return to duty underscores the importance of this cultural ceremony and his commitment to the people and traditions of Oyo State.
