Oyo State Governor Seyi Makinde has pledged a comprehensive upgrade of emergency and fire response services following a destructive fire at Fresh FM’s headquarters in Ibadan. The inferno, which struck the renowned radio station in the Challenge area on Friday night, caused extensive damage to key facilities, including the studios of Fresh FM and Blast FM, the newsroom, transmitter room, and administrative offices.
Governor Makinde arrived at the site around 7:30 p.m. to inspect the aftermath and express his sympathy to the station’s founder, Dr. Yinka Ayefele, and the management team. He described the incident as “deeply unfortunate,” but emphasized that it serves as a crucial wake-up call for the government to bolster the state’s emergency response capabilities.
“This tragedy highlights gaps in our fire and emergency systems,” Makinde said. “If our local fire station at Scout Camp had been adequately equipped and responsive, the damage could have been contained. I am committed to working with Oyo State Fire Service leadership to restructure and enhance efficiency.”
Makinde assured Fresh FM of swift government support to restore operations, stressing the station’s pivotal role in keeping residents informed. He expressed relief that no lives were lost, calling for gratitude and collective resolve to overcome the setback. “We must be grateful that the incident claimed no lives. The state government stands ready to help Fresh FM resume broadcasting as soon as possible.”
In response, Dr. Ayefele thanked the governor for his prompt intervention and compassion. He commended first responders, listeners, and supporters both at home and abroad, inviting collaborative efforts for rebuilding. “The governor’s visit is a testament to caring leadership,” Ayefele remarked. “We appreciate the overwhelming support from our audience and emergency personnel. Together, we will restore Fresh FM.”
Eyewitness accounts and station insiders revealed that delayed emergency response may have worsened the extent of the damage, echoing the need for increased investment in fire service operations and equipment. The management and staff have requested ongoing public solidarity as they rebuild the media house, now approaching its 10th anniversary marked by resilience amid adversity.
No casualties were reported, and investigations into the cause of the fire are underway. The tragedy has united fellow broadcasters and the Oyo State community, with messages of solidarity pouring in from across the region.
