‘Made in Nigeria, Built for the World’: Davido, Dangote Put Refinery IPO on Times Square

There are few places on earth where a Nigerian industrial project can announce itself more loudly than Times Square.

On Tuesday, Nigerian music star David Adeleke, popularly known as Davido, joined billionaire businessman Aliko Dangote in New York as a giant digital billboard promoted the Dangote Petroleum Refinery’s Initial Public Offering.

The image quickly became a striking combination of Nigeria’s entertainment power and its industrial ambition.

The billboard carried the message, “Made in Nigeria. Built for the World,” linking Dangote’s refinery to a broader effort to present Nigerian enterprise to an international audience.

More than a billboard

The New York appearance comes as the Dangote Refinery IPO enters a critical phase.

The offer opened on September 14 and comprises 4.1 billion shares priced at ₦525 each.

The minimum subscription is 10 shares, while the offer is scheduled to close on October 13, according to the Nigerian Exchange and the Securities and Exchange Commission.

If fully subscribed, the offer is expected to raise about ₦2.15 trillion. The refinery is already one of the most consequential industrial projects in Nigeria’s recent economic history.

The IPO therefore represents more than another corporate share sale. It is an attempt to bring ordinary investors into the ownership structure of a facility that has become central to Nigeria’s petroleum refining ambitions.

The offer has also generated unusual public attention. Earlier in the IPO campaign, heavy retail interest reportedly overwhelmed some digital investment platforms, while Nigerians turned the prospect of owning refinery shares into jokes, memes and social-media conversations.

Why Davido matters

Davido’s presence gives the financial story a cultural dimension. The singer commands an audience that extends well beyond Nigeria, particularly among young Africans and the global Nigerian diaspora.

His appearance alongside Dangote effectively placed two different versions of Nigerian influence in the same frame: entertainment and industrial capital.

For a refinery seeking broad investor participation, that visibility matters. It also captures the changing way major Nigerian business stories are now communicated.

A financial transaction that might once have been confined to stockbrokers and business pages is being carried into popular culture through celebrities, social media and international advertising.

But the glamour does not change the fundamentals.

The Securities and Exchange Commission has warned prospective investors to use only officially approved subscription channels, verify platforms and avoid unsolicited offers or messages promising guaranteed allocations.

For investors, the Times Square billboard is therefore publicity, not a substitute for reading the prospectus.

For Nigeria, however, the picture is unmistakable: a refinery built in Lagos is now being advertised in one of the world’s most recognisable public spaces.

And with Davido standing beside Dangote, the message was delivered in a language that both Wall Street and Afrobeats audiences understand: Nigeria is selling a stake in one of its biggest industrial bets.
