Lieutenant Samson Haruna, a Nigerian Army medical doctor and officer, tragically lost his life following a brutal domestic incident at Wellington Bassey Barracks in Abak, Akwa Ibom State. The event, which has sent shockwaves through the military community, occurred on September 22, 2025, just six months after his marriage.
Dr. Haruna, originally from Benue State, had proudly served as the Regimental Medical Officer with the 6 Battalion Medical Unit. His dedication to both the medical profession and military service earned him great respect among colleagues and friends. On April 21, 2025, he married Nurse Retyit Dalong in her hometown of Jos, with hopes of building a happy family life.

However, the union was marred by allegations and disputes that escalated tragically. Reports indicate that in the months following their wedding, tensions over infidelity allegations intensified. On the night of the incident, after a heated argument, Lt. Haruna had retired to bed. It was during this time that Mrs. Haruna allegedly poured petrol on the sleeping officer and set him on fire.
The grievously injured officer was initially treated at the barracks’ Military Reference Section before being transferred to the University of Uyo Teaching Hospital (UUTH) for critical care. Despite the best efforts of medical personnel, Lt. Haruna succumbed to his severe burns.

Military authorities have confirmed the arrest of Mrs. Samson Haruna, who remains in custody as investigations continue into the full circumstances surrounding this tragic event. The Nigerian Army community mourns the loss of one of its distinguished medical officers and calls attention to the urgent need for addressing domestic violence within its ranks.

This heartbreaking incident serves as a grave reminder of the dangers of domestic discord and its devastating consequences on families and communities alike.
