The fourth ValidViewNetwork Monthly Global Discourse, themed “The Lost Promise of 6-3-3-4: Can Nigeria Still Recover Its Technological Vision?”, holds virtually on Sunday, September 27, 2026, from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m. WAT, with Prof. Tunde Adeniran, OFR, and Chief Tola Adeniyi as Distinguished Discussants.

The virtual conversation will examine the history, promise and failures of Nigeria’s 6-3-3-4 education system while asking whether its original technological vision can still be recovered.

Four decades ago, Nigeria bet its future on a number: 6-3-3-4.

It was meant to be the arithmetic of a technological nation: six years to build a foundation, three to discover a vocation, three more to sharpen it, and four to crown the journey with a degree that would put skilled hands and sharpened minds to work rebuilding the country.

Today, that promise reads more like an epitaph than a policy.

Millions of graduates roam the streets without meaningful employment, technical education has been severely weakened, and industries still struggle to find the skills they need.

It is against this uncomfortable arithmetic that ValidViewNetwork convenes its fourth Monthly Global Discourse, asking the question the nation has avoided for too long: was 6-3-3-4 ever truly implemented, or has Nigeria spent forty years mourning a policy it never gave a real chance to live?

Why the Discourse Matters

The conversation arrives at a moment when Nigeria’s youth employment crisis has grown too loud to ignore, while the gap between the country’s technological ambitions and its educational outcomes remains difficult to overlook.

ValidViewNetwork reports that the fourth edition will interrogate whether the 6-3-3-4 system, as originally conceived, still offers a useful blueprint for building a technologically competitive Nigeria, or whether the nation must design an entirely new architecture for its education-to-industry pipeline.

The discussion will also examine the gap between policy intention and policy execution, a recurring Nigerian problem in which ambitious policies are weakened by inconsistent implementation, inadequate funding and poor institutional continuity.

Another central issue will be the widening disconnect between what schools teach and what industries actually need.

The discussion builds on the third edition’s examination of truth, criticism and national image.

Where that edition asked how Nigerians should speak about their country’s problems, the fourth asks what Nigerians must now do to fix one of the oldest and most consequential of them.

Distinguished Discussants

Chief Tola Adeniyi brings more than five decades of journalism, national commentary and public intellectual engagement to the conversation.

From his pioneering years in broadcast media to his enduring influence as a columnist and cultural thinker, Adeniyi has consistently engaged questions of education, culture, national identity and societal development.

His perspective is particularly relevant to a conversation about an education system designed not merely to produce certificates, but to help shape the kind of society Nigeria hoped to become.

Prof. Tunde Adeniran, OFR, brings a different and equally important perspective. As a former Minister of Education, distinguished academic and public administrator, he has the rare vantage point of having participated directly in the governance of Nigeria’s education system.

His experience and scholarship position him to provide historical context on the intentions behind 6-3-3-4, examine the challenges that affected its implementation and discuss the reforms required to reconnect Nigerian education with technological and economic advancement.

Together, the two discussants offer a potentially powerful combination: the journalist’s long view of Nigeria’s national journey and the policymaker’s experience within the system itself.

The question before them is simple but uncomfortable: can a promise made four decades ago still be redeemed?

Stakeholders Invited

Stakeholders across education, government, industry, academia, civil society and youth organisations are invited to join the conversation.

Nigerians at home and abroad are also encouraged to participate, engage the discussants and contribute their experiences of an education system that has shaped, or failed to shape, their working lives.
