United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm, Von Batten-Montague-York, has alleged that its founder, Dr Karl Von Batten, was offered $3 million and invited to a confidential meeting in London to drop the firm’s campaign over alleged heroin-trafficking records involving President Bola Tinubu.

A Shocking Allegation from Washington

A United States-based policy advisory and lobbying firm has dropped a bombshell allegation that could have far-reaching implications for Nigeria’s political landscape.

Von Batten-Montague-York, a firm linked to former Vice President Atiku Abubakar, has claimed that it was offered $3 million to abandon its campaign concerning historical US records and allegations of heroin trafficking involving President Bola Ahmed Tinubu.

The firm made the explosive allegation in a statement posted on its verified X handle on Wednesday, September 2, 2026.

According to the firm, its founder, Dr Karl Von Batten, received unsolicited offers of the $3 million sum, along with an invitation to a confidential meeting in London.

“Thank You, But No Thanks”

The firm claims the approach was made “a few days ago” by a “highly placed individual” whom it was informed was connected to President Tinubu.

It believes the offers were an attempt to persuade Dr Von Batten to end its campaign concerning President Tinubu’s alleged heroin-trafficking records.

“We have a simple message for President Tinubu, Nigeria’s ruling party, All Progressives Congress, APC, and their associates. Thank you for the offer, but no thanks,” the firm wrote.

Von Batten-Montague-York said its founder refused the offers and immediately preserved copies of the communications. It also claimed that after the refusal, a smear campaign against Dr Von Batten began.

Firm to Hand Over Evidence to US Authorities

In a significant move, the firm stated that it would be submitting the alleged $3 million offer and related communications to the United States Department of Justice (DOJ) and the Federal Bureau of Investigation (FBI) to protect its reputation and allow the appropriate authorities to review the matter.

The lobbying firm has been at the centre of renewed attention surrounding old US records connected to Tinubu. Its campaign is focused on obtaining documents held by US law enforcement agencies in connection with investigations dating back to the late 1980s and early 1990s.

The records have become the subject of a long-running Freedom of Information Act case in the United States.

Presidency Dismisses Claims as “Political Speculation”

Reacting to the allegation, the Presidency has dismissed the claims as political speculation. Sunday Dare, Special Adviser to President Tinubu on Media and Public Communications, questioned the credibility of the firm and accused it of presenting political claims as intelligence reports.

Dare challenged those behind the allegations to produce what they described as a “highly classified intelligence report”, identify their unnamed sources and provide documentary evidence.

According to him, “It is nothing more than political speculation packaged as classified information” . He also rejected any suggestion that Von Batten was speaking for the US government, describing the claim that he was a “Senior Government Advisor” as misleading.

The Atiku Connection

The controversy has also shone a light on the relationship between Atiku Abubakar and the lobbying firm.

Sunday Dare cited what he said were publicly verifiable filings under the United States Foreign Agents Registration Act (FARA) , which showed that Atiku contracted Von Batten-Montague-York on a $1.2 million, 12-month retainer.

Dare alleged that the arrangement was aimed at countering Nigerian government narratives and using historical US legal records for political leverage ahead of the 2027 elections.

A Pattern of Political Expediency

This latest development is a stark reminder of the lengths to which political actors will go to protect their interests.

The alleged $3 million offer, if true, represents an attempt to silence a campaign seeking truth and transparency. However, it is the response of the firm, rejecting the offer and vowing to take the matter to US authorities, that is commendable.

Yet, this saga also highlights a troubling pattern in Nigerian politics; the willingness to use any means necessary to achieve political ends.

While the firm’s claims remain unverified and the Presidency has dismissed them as political grandstanding, the mere fact that such allegations are being made in the international arena is deeply concerning.

A Lesson for Nigerian Youths

This incident serves as a powerful lesson for Nigerian youths who are often used as pawns in the political games of the elite.

The same politicians who are willing to allegedly spend millions of dollars to silence a foreign lobbyist are the ones who recruit young people for thuggery and violence during elections.

It is a classic case of political expediency: the powerful will always find a way to protect their own interests, even if it means sacrificing the future of the nation’s youth.

The children of the elite are never on the frontlines of political violence; they are safely tucked away in universities abroad or in comfortable homes.

It is the children of the poor who are used as cannon fodder.

As Nigerians, we must learn to see through these deceptions. We must reject the politics of violence and manipulation and hold our leaders accountable.

The battle for the soul of Nigeria is not one that should be fought with machetes and guns, but with the ballot box and the power of the people.

The $3 million offer, whether true or not, is a reminder that the stakes are high, and the powerful will stop at nothing to maintain their grip on power.

But ultimately, it is the ordinary Nigerian who pays the price for this political maneuvering.
