Lion Attack: Wildife Society of Nigeria Commiserates With OAU, Olawuyi Family

The Wildlife Society of Nigeria has expressed deep sorrow and condolences over the tragic incident that occured at the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University in Ile-Ife, involving the untimely demise of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi.

The Society in a press release signed by its National Secretary, Dr Orimaye Jacob Oluwafemi, described Olawuyi as a dedicated veterinary technologist, whose death is unfortunate.

“With a heavy heart, we acknowledge the loss of Mr. Olawuyi, who has been managing the Zoological Garden and caning for the resident lion. His long-standing service to the institution
showed bis commitment and passion for wildlife conservation.

The circumstances surrounding Mr. Olawuyi’s passing are under investigation, and we await
official findings to understand better the events that led to this unfortunate incident.

“Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and colleagues during this difficult time, and we extend our deepest
sympathies to them.

As an organisation dedicated to protecting and preserveing wildlife in Nigeria, we recognise the inherent risks of working closely with Wild animals.

The Society then “emphasised the importance of adhering to strict safety protocols and guidelines to ensure the well -being of wildlife caretakers and the animals under their care.

“The Wildlife Society of Nigeria will continue to monitor the situation closely and collaborate with relevant authorities to prevent such incidents in the future.

“We also extend our support to the Zoological Garden of Obafemi Awolowo University and its staff as they cope with the aftermath of this tragedy.

“In memory of Mr. Olabode Olawuyi, let us renew our commitment to promoting responsible wildlife management practices and fostering a safety culture within zoology and animal care.
