Let there be Light. FG bets on China to finally crack Nigeria’s power puzzle

ABUJA — For a country where “up NEPA” has become a national catchphrase of relief rather than routine, any promise of reliable electricity draws both hope and healthy scepticism.

The Federal Government is once again staking its credibility on a familiar partner, declaring that deeper cooperation with China in the power sector will deliver the steady electricity and renewable energy access that has eluded generations of Nigerians.

ValidViewNetwork can confirm that the latest declaration builds on a partnership that has quietly deepened over the past two years, moving well beyond ceremonial handshakes into signed agreements, pilot projects.

And now, according to the government, a renewed push for scale.

This is not Nigeria’s first courtship with Beijing on power. Government records show the Rural Electrification Agency signing renewable energy memoranda with Chinese firms as far back as 2024, including a deal with Mutual Commitment Company Limited covering solar mini-grids and a renewable energy training centre.

Since then, the China International Contractors Association has pushed for collaboration on smart cities and grid infrastructure, while NNPC has separately brought in Chinese partners to evaluate reviving the Port Harcourt and Warri refineries.

According to reports gotten by ValidViewNetwork, officials frame the current cooperation as addressing Nigeria’s stubborn transmission bottleneck.

Nigeria, a country with roughly 13 gigawatts of installed generation capacity but barely 5.7 gigawatts reaching the grid at peak, leaving tens of millions without reliable access.

The government insists Chinese technology and financing can help close that gap faster than previous domestic-only efforts have managed, particularly in solar and other renewable segments.

A promise Nigerians have heard before

Findings by ValidViewNetwork show that skepticism by Nigerians is not unwarranted: previous MoUs with Chinese firms have, in the past, taken years to translate into visible megawatts on the ground.
