ABEOKUTA – Dr. Tunde Lemo, a former Deputy Governor of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) and a frontline 2027 governorship aspirant under the All Progressives Congress (APC), has hailed the synergy between the Federal and Ogun State governments following the historic commissioning of the Gateway International Airport in Iperu-Remo.
Speaking on the sidelines of the colorful ceremony held on Saturday, April 4, Lemo described the facility and the simultaneous launch of the state-owned Gateway Air as “economic game-changers” that would redefine the fiscal landscape of the Gateway State.
A Catalyst for Growth
Lemo, who mobilized a massive wave of supporters to welcome President Bola Ahmed Tinubu to the state, noted that the airport is more than just a transport hub; it is a strategic asset designed to bolster Nigeria’s foreign exchange earnings.
“This project represents progress, opportunity, and a new economic pathway for our people. It will create jobs, boost commerce, and position Ogun as a strategic hub for investment,” Lemo remarked.
He specifically pointed to the airport’s cargo capabilities, emphasizing its role in the seamless export of agricultural products. He predicted that with the full operationalization of the facility, Ogun State is on track to rank among the top three states in Nigeria for Internally Generated Revenue (IGR) within the next five years.
Praise for Leadership
The governorship hopeful was lavish in his praise for Governor Dapo Abiodun, describing his administration as “visionary” for seeing the project through to completion. He also extended olive branches to past administrations, acknowledging that their foundational efforts provided the bedrock for the current success.
”Governor Abiodun deserves commendation for his commitment to legacy infrastructure,” Lemo said. “We must also recognize the contributions of past leaders whose foundations made these strides achievable.”
Support for Tinubu’s Reforms
Reaffirming his loyalty to the center, Lemo called on Nigerians to sustain their support for President Tinubu beyond 2027. He described the President’s current economic reforms as “bold and necessary” measures required to rescue the national economy from long-term stagnation.
“Mr. President’s reform agenda requires courage and consistency. I remain fully supportive of efforts aimed at repositioning Nigeria for sustainable growth and prosperity,” he added.
The event, which saw the President unveil two newly acquired aircraft for the state’s airline, marks a significant milestone in Governor Abiodun’s infrastructure drive. Lemo concluded by thanking his supporters and the residents of Ogun State for their orderly conduct during the presidential visit, noting that their behavior reflected the “true character” of the state.
