Two lives were tragically cut short on Friday night following a violent disturbance at the prominent IMAX Cinemas in Lekki, Lagos State, after a knife and machete-wielding intruder breached the premises.
The chaos erupted when the suspect, who eyewitnesses noted appeared heavily intoxicated and destitute, attempted to force his way past the facility’s security checkpoints. Upon being challenged and denied entry by the guards, the individual flew into a fit of rage, drawing a machete and knife.
During the ensuing struggle, the assailant fatally stabbed one security guard and severely wounded another. Panic quickly swept through patrons and staff inside the complex. As the situation escalated, an angry crowd at the scene descended upon the attacker, mobbing him to death.
Lagos State Police Command spokesperson, SP Adebisi Abimbola, confirmed the fatalities, stating that a full-scale homicide and security investigation is underway. Authorities have taken the cinema’s Chief Security Officer into custody to aid inquiries. Detectives are currently analyzing closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage from the facility to reconstruct the timeline, verify the true identity of the assailant, and ascertain if any other parties played a role in the violence.
The incident has renewed public anxiety regarding security protocols and threat detection at high-traffic commercial and recreational centers across the metropolis. Police have assured that further developments will be made public as investigations progress.
