LAGOS, Nigeria — The Lagos State Parks and Gardens Agency (LASPARK) has officially reopened all public recreational parks across the metropolis, signaling the end of a three-week intensive maintenance shutdown.
The parks, which include the popular Ndubisi Kanu Park in Alausa, Johnson Jakande Tinubu (JJT) Park, and Dr. Abayomi Finnih Park in Oregun, were closed from January 12 to January 31, 2026. The strategic closure was necessitated by the heavy foot traffic recorded during the 2025/2026 Christmas and New Year festivities, which left many green spaces in need of restoration.
Restoring the “Green Heart” of Lagos
Speaking on the reopening, LASPARK General Manager, Mrs. Adetoun Popoola, noted that the exercise was more than just routine cleaning. The intervention included:
- Horticultural Revitalization: Reseeding of worn lawn areas and advanced landscaping to ensure the lushness of the parks.
- Infrastructure Upgrades: Repairing playground equipment, benches, and walkway lighting to ensure visitor safety.
- General Sanitization: Deep cleaning of facilities to restore the serene ambience Lagosians have come to expect from state-managed green spaces.
“Our parks are vital to the environmental sustainability and the mental well-being of residents,” Popoola stated. “This maintenance period ensures that these spaces remain functional, safe, and beautiful for families, fitness enthusiasts, and tourists alike.”
A Call for Collective Stewardship
While the gates are now wide open, the Agency is appealing to the public to act as guardians of these state assets. LASPARK emphasized that maintaining the “Greater Lagos” vision requires a partnership with the citizenry. Visitors are urged to:
- Avoid littering and use provided waste bins.
- Protect flowers and young trees from damage.
- Report any misuse of park amenities to on-site security or officials.
The reopening comes as part of the Sanwo-Olu administration’s broader commitment to urban renewal and promoting a healthy, active lifestyle for the over 20 million residents of the state.
